  2. Objectives: • 1. To understand and to interpret the value of performance data based on industry standards. • 2. To measure the students’ knowledge in the following categories: • a. To make accurate observations of livestock. • b. To determine the desirable traits in animals

  3. Cont: • c. To make logical decisions based on these observations. • d. To discuss and to defend their decision for their placing • e. To instill an appreciation for desirable selection management and marketing techniques.

  4. Objectives Cont • 3. To develop the ability to select and market livestock that will satisfy consumer demands and provide increased economic returns to producers. Provide positive economic returns to producers as well as meet the needs of the industry. • 4. To become proficient in communicating in the terminology of the industry and the consumer. • 5. To identify the criteria used in grading livestock. (Scenarios will be used in the selection process.) • 6. To provide an opportunity for participants to become acquainted with professionals in the industry.

  5. Event Rules • 1. Teams make up- Teams may consist of three or four members. • 2. Team ranking is determined by combining the scores of the top three students from each team. • 3. Teams with fewer than three members will not be eligible for team awards ,but students may receive individual awards.

  6. Team Activity • 1. There will be three female selection classes, one each in beef, sheep and hogs, made up of eight animals. • 2. Performance data will be provided • 3. Participants will be allowed 15 min. for each keep/cull class.

  7. Individual Activity • 1. Livestock Classes • a. Six classes of livestock of four animals. • b. There will be one class each of breeding and market beef, sheep, and swine. 2. Oral Reasons a. Three sets of oral reasons will be designated by the event superintendent at the beginning of the event. b. Reasons will be given after all the classes have been placed.

  8. Individual Activity Cont. • 3. Swine Market • a. One class of market swine consisting of 5 head will be graded according to the latest U.S.D.A. market grades. • b. Forms will be provided in the coaches’ packets prior to the event.

  9. Individual Activity Cont. • 4. Beef Slaughter Class • a. One class of 5 slaughter cattle will be graded individually, according to the latest market grades. • b. The slaughter class will be graded according to cutability.

  10. Individual Activity Cont. • 5. Beef feeder class • a. One class of 5 feeder cattle will be grades according to the latest market grades. • 6. Written Test • a. A multiple choice exam will be given to determine team members understanding of the livestock industry. • b. Exam will consist of 50 multiple choice questions. • c. Contestant will have 60 minutes to finish the exam.

  11. Keep/Cull class sample card • Beef/Swine/Sheep • Participants/Team Name_________ Participant/Team No.________ • Circle or list the numbers of the 4 animals you want to keep as replacements. 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 • Event officials will assign a point value to each one of the individual animals, giving the most points to the most desirable animal and the least points to the least desirable animal. If the participant selects the best four animals, full credit will be given

  12. Equipment • 1. Materials students must provide. • a. Participants must bring a #2 pencil. • b. Participants are not to bring any paper or clipboards this material will be provided.
