  1. 2009 WOCN Annual Conference Pre-Conference Session Build Your Practice Around the WOCNCB’S Professional Growth Program (PGP) Donna L. Loehner RN, BSN, CWOCN Board Liaison to the PGP Committee

  2. Relieve Test Anxiety! What is the TOP benefit of completing PGP portfolio for recertification through the WOCNCB? Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety Anxiety

  3. What are other benefits? • Reflects professional practice • Demonstrates expanded practice • Details learning • Demonstrates competency • Documents knowledge and achievements • Documents clinical and educational accomplishments • Helps achieve your career goals

  4. Goals for this Session  Providing ideas and helpful hints for completing your portfolio  Organize your portfolio  Increase your confidence to recertify  Continue to build your practice

  5. Top Ten Tips Begin compiling and filing the PGP materials early. Don’t wait until the year your certification expires to begin. Keep accurate and detailed records of your WOC practice activities that count toward PGP points. Points must be obtained by activities during the 5-year certification period and before submission of the recertification application.

  6. Top Ten Tips • Check the deadlines! You must finish the required points prior to the application deadline.

  7. Top Ten Tips • Your application, point logs and verification forms must be type written. • Save time, effort, and confusion – keeping the portfolio near the required 80 points. • Send your portfolio via a traceable method that requires a signature. (Special note: Certified mail is traceable only if you request and pay extra for tracking.)

  8. Top Ten Tips • Review the eligibility requirements • Review PGP algorithm flowchart • Ask for help! If you have any questions: - Call the WOCNCB Office 1-888-496-2622 - Visit the Web site at www.wocncb.org - Submit a question to the “Ask the Board” section on the Web site

  9. Application Review Process

  10. Using the PGP Forms - Overview Each specialty that you are recertifying (Wound, Ostomy, Continence) requires 80 PGP points. For example: If you are recertifying your CWOCN credential, you will need 240 PGP points to successfully recertify – that’s 80 x 3 specialties, or 240 points

  11. Using the PGP Forms The portfolio process is flexible – you can include PGP points from nine Categories (A through I) A – Continuing Education F – Professional Organizations B – Projects G – Academics C – Research H – Self Assessment D – Publications I – Preapproval E – Teaching Important: Your portfolio MUST contain 10 points from Category A: Continuing Education that relate to the clinical focus. You may include up to 30 Continuing Education credits.

  12. Using the PGP Forms Your portfolio includes a Point Log for each specialty. The log is a summary/table of contents of all the activities you have submitted within each specialty. The Point Log is your checklist in obtaining the total number of points that you are claiming for recertification

  13. Using the PGP FormsSample Point Log: Wound

  14. Category A: Continuing Education

  15. Category A: Continuing Education • Always remember: You need a separate Verification Form for each specialty area, and your portfolio must contain points for Category A: Continuing Education. • Required: A minimum of 10 PGP points directly related to the specialty. A maximum of 30 PGP points are allowed. If you have a total of 30 points, be sure that 20 are directly related to the specialty. • Point calculation: 1 PGP point for each CE credit. A Contact Hour (CE credit): 60 minutes = 1 PGP Point

  16. Category A: Continuing Education List each individual educational session title or course title separately. For example: Do not list as “WOCN Annual Conference” with the total CE credits. It is not acceptable to transfer points from one specialty to another – so points related to wound or ostomy cannot be applied to the continence specialty.

  17. Category A: Continuing Education WOCN Professional Practice has to directly impact your role as WOC Nurse. These sessions would count: • Marketing Your Business • Legal Issues • Integrating Technology and Outpatient Billing/Reimbursement These sessions would NOT count: • IV Therapy • Basic Life Support (BLS) • Creating the Environment of Safety: Healthcare Delivery Compass • High Risk Medications • Preparing for the Magnet Journey
