  2. Minamoto Yoritomo • Determined to become real ruler of country • Demanded special title • 1192 made shogun (meaning “general”)

  3. Move to Kamakura • Capital administration decadent and incompetent • Fear of corruption • Set up a national administration in Kamakura (by Tokyo) set up a tent government known as a bakufu (Shogunate)

  4. The Shogun and Emperor • Until 1333 shogunate governed Japan • Formal orders from Emperors in Kyoto (who were powerless) • Imperial prestige legitimized shogunate

  5. The Hojo • After Minamoto Yoritomo’s death, his wife, Masako, governed through young boy shogun • She made her father regent • Real power passed to Masako’s family (Hojo) • Shogun also became powerless position (like the emperor)

  6. 1232 law code proclaimed that confirmed the chain of command • Clarified rights and duties of administration

  7. Kamakura Buddhism • Buddhism flourished • Monasteries extended • New schools of Buddhism appeared • Buddhist monasteries were Japan’s first schools

  8. Pure Land -individual to achieve enlightenment alone -could achieve rebirth in heaven by repeating name Amida Buddha Nichiren -founded by monk of the same name in 1253 -claimed to be the only real form of Buddhism -salvation to be found through scripture

  9. Zen Buddhism • Emphasized self-discipline • Emotion was the source of action • Zazen: practice of sitting in meditation until intuition brought enlightenment • Favoured school of Samurai
