  2. International Baccalaureate The IB community - a global community of • 2,378 schools • 644,000 students • in 128 countries • 70,000 teachers plus parents, staff, examiners and other colleagues .… and growing

  3. IB community theme aims to bring together and strengthen the whole IB community students, teachers, parents, IB staff, and all who are connected with IB while engaging with and taking action on a number of global issues.

  11. How do we engage with the community theme? Encourage IB World Schools to share current work and activities that relate to sharing our humanity TheIB will highlight current work and activities in schools that relate to sharing our humanity

  12. How do we engage with the community theme? The IB encourages and facilitates schools to explore and address the theme further through: • Regular classroom teaching • “Special projects” • Community service individually and/or collaboratively with other IB World Schools

  13. How do we engage with the community theme? Schools can explore and address thetheme • by adjusting the focus and slant of normal classroom work not by adding to it • and within the existing curriculum frameworks

  14. In the Primary Years Programme Within the transdisciplinary themes. Examples: • Global infectious diseases within “how the world works” • Global poverty within “Sharing the planet”

In the Middle Years Programme Within normal subjects and requirements Examples: • Selection of relevant literature in languages A and B • Global infectious diseases within sciences and technology • Selection of appropriate relevant material in statistics • Selection of topic of personal project

In the Diploma Programme Within normal subjects and TOK Examples: • Relevant books within language programmes • Studying global infectious diseases within the science group project • Using statistical examples relating to ICT access, income levels, disease infection rates etc in Maths. • Ethical aspects of global poverty within TOK

  17. Coordination between programmes The community theme can engage • students on two or three IB programmes • IB and non-IB students on a common topic, e.g. global poverty.

  18. “Special projects” / service Work beyond or different from regular classroom teaching e.g. research, special days, assemblies, conferences, action, service • within schools • between schools The IB provides opportunities for • networking • posting projects • recognition

Sharing our humanity: objectives By the end of the community theme: sharing our humanity, in April 2010, we hope the following objectives will result: • Enhanced student knowledge and understanding of global issues relating to the theme • Greater understanding within schools of how global issues can be addressed within IB programmes • Practical actions relating to the theme topics

  22. Sharing our humanity – IB actions IB is addressing the community theme at conferences in conference themes, keynote speeches and presentations in features in IB World magazine and on the website

  23. Sharing our humanity – IB actions The IB is facilitating the community theme through: • the new dedicated website http://communitytheme.ibo.org • recognition of activities and projects

  24. The IB community theme website Online environment for students, teachers, parents, IB staff and others, related to the community theme. First opportunity for students and parents to contribute to an IB website.

  26. The IB community theme website A developing collection of • Information and resources • Ideas and opinions • Suggestions for action on global issues with contributions posted by the whole IB community

  27. The IB community theme website • Publication of projects and reports of actions by the IB community • Notice board for collaboration between schools • Forums • Free posting, moderated by the IB

  28. Sharing our humanity – community actions • Sub-regional associations are reflecting the theme in their conferences and meetings. • Schools are reporting what they are already doing – and engaging further with the theme. • Some schools are basing the PYP exhibition on issues of the theme.

  29. Community actions: Education for all • Students from Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic High School in Kingston, Ontario, Canada built a children’s playground in the Dominican Republic.

  30. Community actions: Education for all / digital divide • Students at Bali International School, Indonesia, have developed the Taman Bacaan Community Library in Bali, providing books and computers for the local community – opened February 2008.

  31. Community actions: Global poverty Bahrain School students • studied poverty in development economics in class as part of their IB Diploma Programme economics course.

  32. Community actions: Global poverty Bahrain School students • did something about it in the local community – by improving living conditions for poor local expatriate workers through • Raising funds • Decorating an apartment for 37 people, providing drinking water and a new bathroom

  33. Community actions: Global poverty • and brought back their experience and knowledge to the economics classroom in considering economic theory.

  34. IB global lessons on poverty • Encourage IB World Schools to teach a common lesson on ethical aspects of global poverty in October 2008 • in the Diploma programme - in TOK • in the Middle Years Programme - in Humanities

IB global lessons on poverty • September 2008: • Lesson outlines available on the community theme website, with suggestions for extension work in other subjects • October 2008: • Lessons taught • October 17 • International Day for the Eradication of Poverty • October until mid-November 2008: • Online discussion on the community theme website
