Recruitment and Sampling Strategies for Rural Health Research in Turkey

This project outlines the recruitment and sampling framework for a health study in rural Turkey, targeting populations in villages with fewer than 20,000 residents. The study focuses on settlements within a two-hour drive from urban areas but at least 50 km away. Key steps achieved include obtaining ethic committee approvals and developing a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Future actions involve translating questionnaires, meeting local committees, and recruiting survey staff. Suggestions are welcome to enhance the project's realization.

  11. Steps taken until now Ethic Committee approval • Done • If genetic material will be kept in Turkey • To export the genetic material we need approval of Central Ethics Committee of the Ministry of Health • Any possibility to do genetic studies within Turkey?

  12. Steps taken until now Application for a grant from TUBİTAK • Declined • We are waiting for the reasons on which their decline was based • We are going to reapply after correcting shortcomings • Re-evaluation of the project takes almost 3-4 months

  13. Steps taken until now Semiquantitative FFQ • A pilot study to prepare a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was designed and approved for financial support by TUBITAK but not started

  14. Steps ahead • Translation and validation of questionnaires • Meeting of the local committees • Recruitment and education of the surveying people, nurses, dieticians and laboratory technicians • Standardization of the laboratories that will process the collected blood
