Background of Georgetown University • Founded in 1789—the oldest Jesuit university in US • Jesuit mission of education: • Established in 1789 in the spirit of the new republic, the university was founded on the principle that serious and sustained discourse among people of different faiths, cultures, and beliefs promotes intellectual, ethical and spiritual understanding. How we manage challenges? • MOST CHALLENGING: lack of language • Email communication • Outreach • Regular meeting—three to four times a semester • Research and curricular needs • Korean language press catalogs for selection • Recruiting of student assistants w/ language proficiency • Translation • Searching system • Copy cataloging

Collection Development Principles • BE VERY SELECTIVE • Buy only those catering to curricular and research needs • Utilizing FREE resources • KOFIC • FREE distribution of reference material • Grants from Korea Foundation on database subscription • Seeking funds/support from Center of Asia Studies • TITLE IV
