  1. FOIL Method A system that will follow you through high school and beyond Created by Justin Wigard Slideshare.net/wigar1jm

  2. Review: Distribution Property • Apply yesterday’s Distribution Property to single terms. • (Variable should come first in parentheses). • Ex: 7(2x+4) 7*2x + 7*4 14x+28 • What if there are two terms…?

  3. FOIL Method • F-First term in each set multiplied together • O-Outer term in each set multiplied together • I-Inner term in each set multiplied together • L-Last term in each set multiplied together • Combine like terms and simplify CONFUSED???

  4. FOIL Method-Broken Down • Given the function: (a+b)(c+d) • The terms a and c are first. • The terms a and d are outer. • The terms b and c are inner. • The terms b and d are last. • Thus: ac+ad+bc+bd • http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/applying-the-foil-method-to-binomials.html

  5. Applying FOIL Method-First • Ex: (2x-3)(3x+5) • F-First terms multiply together (2x-3)(3x+5) This will be included in your final answer. F F 6x2 2x*3x= Current Answer 6x2+___+___+___ Multiply First Terms

  6. Applying FOIL Method-Outer • Ex: (2x-3)(3x+5) • O-Outside terms multiply together (2x-3)(3x+5) 2x*5= This will be included in your final answer. O O 10x Current Answer 6x2+10x+___+___ Multiply Outer Terms

  7. Applying FOIL Method-Inside • Ex: (2x-3)(3x+5) • I-Inside terms multiply together (2x-3)(3x+5) -3*3x= This will be included in your final answer. I I -9x Current Answer 6x2+10x-9x+___ Multiply Inside Terms

  8. Applying FOIL Method-Last • Ex: (2x-3)(3x+5) • L-Last terms multiply together (2x-3)(3x+5) -3*5= This will be included in your final answer. L L x -15 Current Answer 6x2+10x-9x-15 Multiply Inside Terms

  9. Applying FOIL Method-Combine Like Terms • Combine terms with same variable & exponents • Simplify for final answer 6x2+10x-9x-15  6x2+x-15

  10. Methods Behind the Madness • Need to keep things “in order” • 6x2 2nd order (2 in exponent value) • X1st order (Assumed 1 in exponent) • -15 No variable places it at end of equation • FOIL method keeps equation perfectly ordered

  11. Future Applications of FOIL Method • Creating and graphing quadratic functions • Solving trinomials and polynomials • Calculus and Trigonometry • Breaking down and factoring large polynomials

  12. Homework Problems • (2x+2)(3x+3) • (8x-5)(7x-4) • (2x-1)(18x+2) • ATTEMPT solving before next class period
