P E T • Polyethylene terephthalate commonly abbreviated PET, PETE, or the obsolete PETP or PET-P, is a thermoplastic polymer resin “created by the condensation of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol.” It is colorless, rigid, lightweight, and impact-resistant.
PET • Plastic PET is very important raw material used in man-made fibers. PET is a kind of polyester material for fiber, injection molded parts, as well as blow-molded bottles and jars. Special grades are offered with the required properties for the different applications. • Polyethylene terephthalate(PET) is used beverage, food and other liquid containers, as well as for some other thermoforming applications. • Depending on its processing and thermal history, it may exist both as an amorphous (transparent) and as a semi-crystalline (opaque and white) material. It can be synthesized by a transesterification reaction between ethylene glycol and dimethylterephthalate.
STRUCTURE IUPAC name : poly(ethylene terephthalate) Molecular formula: (C10H8O4)n Related Monomers : Terephthalic acidEthyleneglycol
Depending on its processing and thermal history, polyethylene terephthalate may exist both as an amorphous (transparent) and as a semi-crystalline polymer. The semi crystalline material might appear transparent (particle size < 500 nm) or opaque and white depending on its crystal structure and particle size. Its monomer (bis-β-hydroxyterephthalate) can be synthesized by the etherification reaction between terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol with water as a byproduct, or by transesterification reaction between ethylene glycol and dimethylterephthalate with methanol as a byproduct. Polymerization is through a poly condensation reaction of the monomers (done immediately after esterification/transesterification) with water as the by product.
Plastic PET Characteristics PET containers are widely popular in packaging industries world over. High performance PET is the result of special processes developed to enhance the material characteristics of PET material and can be tailored to specific requirements. The most popular characteristics of PET are: • Light weight • Shatter resistance • Economic cost • High clarity • Reseal ability • Recyclability
PROPERTIES • PET consists of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. • PET can be incinerated without residues for energy recovery. • PET is the most valuable of the recyclable plastics. • PET is reusable as fibre filling for clothing, pallet strapping and moulding, carpeting, as well as in the manufacture of PET containers.
PRODUCTS PET is used to make many products, such as polyester fabric, cable wraps, films, transformer insulation, generator parts, and packaging. It makes up 6.4 percent of all packaging and 14 percent of all plastic containers, including the popular soft drink bottle. Accounting for 43 percent of those sold, PET is the most widely used soft drink container. Aluminum, a close second, is 34 percent, while glass, which used to be 100 percent of the bottles.
PET bottle resin is a very important material driving growth in the developed economies, but growth of PET fiber remains dominant in terms of total polyester. PET growth is driven differently depending on the geographic region. In North America and Western Europe, PET growth is associated primarily with PET bottle resins; demand for PET fiber has been in decline since the late 1990s. PET growth in most other regions is primarily associated with PET fiber. Global polyester growth will continue to be driven by Asia and, more specifically, by the Chinese market.
