  1. CRAFT Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities Technique

  2. What Will Be Covered • Definition of CRAFT • Brainstorming • Nuts and Bolts • How it Works • An Exercise • Summary • Reading List

  3. CRAFT Defined • Created in 1964 by Buffa and Armour • Process layout approach • A heuristic computer program • Compares process departments

  4. Brainstorming Exercise Think of the amount of handling a product will have from one department to another in your company. Does the product have to travel across many departments to get to the next step in the process?

  5. End Task • Minimize Transportation Costs • Improve Work Flow • Utilize labor efficiently • Utilize space efficiently • Eliminate bottlenecks

  6. A A A B B B A A A B B B C C C B B B C C C D D D E E E E E E E E E E E E Nuts and BoltsInitial Layout • Initial Layout of Departments • Dept A • Dept B • Dept C • Dept D • Dept E

  8. Nuts and BoltsFrom-To Chart • Determines which of the two departments has a better from-to matrix, we can calculate the moment of the matrix as follows:

  9. Nuts and BoltsBlock Diagramming Initial Diagram Final Diagram

  10. Benefits and Problems • Benefit • A Computer Program • Flexibilty • Problems • Greedy Algorithm • Inefficient • End result may need to be modified

  13. Summary It is beneficial to use CRAFT but you should also realize that the program is not flawless. The user must understand how the program works of the end product is not as efficient as you had hope.
