Using Career Cases to teach Career Studies Kerr Inkson University of Waikato ICSS 2009
Sample cases “Megan” (fashion designer) “Troy” (garbage collector) “Jimmy” (retail butcher) “Julie” (executive)
Reasons for using Case Studies • Working from reality to theory • Enables student to empathise with “real people” • Respectable history in pedagogy e.g. management studies • Interesting and lively
Cases in “Understanding Careers” • Every chapter starts with a case • 50+ cases in all • Two complex cases: “Aston” and “Brigid” • Some “celebrity” cases • Cases discussed in the text • Use of larger-scale “parent” case as key assessment
Sources of Cases • Research • Deliberate development for teaching • Family/friends • Biography – public figures • Internet • (NB: ethical issues, need for permission, disguise etc)
Principles to Follow • Keep most cases simple • Have a few more complex cases • Choose and write the cases with theory in mind • Cases from personal experience add authenticity
