  2. Gymnosperms • A gymnosperm is a seed plant that produces “naked” seeds (This means seeds are not enclosed in a fruit). • In addition many gymnosperms have needle-like or scale-like leaves and deep growing roots.

  3. Most gymnosperms have reproductive structures called cones. • Most gymnosperms produce male and female cones. • Male cones produce pollen • Female cones produce ovules.

  4. Gymnosperm reproduction • Pollination: Pollen falls from a male cone onto a female cone. In gymnosperms wind is often responsible for pollination. • Fertilization: Once pollination has occurred, the ovule closes and seals in the pollen. Fertilization takes place when the sperm cell fertilizes the egg cell inside each ovule.

  5. Seed development: The fertilized egg develops into the embryo part of the seed. The female cone remains in the tree while the seed matures. This can take up to two years. The male cone on the other hand falls from the tree. • Seed dispersal: When the seeds are mature, the scales open. The wind shakes the seeds out of the cone and carries them away.Only a few seeds will land in suitable places and grow into new plants

  6. Angiosperms • All angiosperms produce flowers and seeds enclosed in fruits. • The main function of flowers is reproduction.

  7. Types of angiosperms • What is the difference in structure between a seed of rice or corn and the seed of a bean or apple? • Angiosperms are divided into two major groups: • Monocots: Have one seed leaf (rice). Monocot flowers have multiples of three petals and their leaves are long and slender. • Dicots: Have two seed leaves (beans). Dicot flowers have four or five petals and their leaves are wide and branching.
