  1. Training Structure • Introductory Training Modules • Overview of the FGDC CSDGM (this module) • FGDC Compliancy • Metadata Development Solutions • Developing a ‘metadata implementation’ • Using templates & tools • NAP of ISO 19139/19115 • Materials • Sample metadata xml • Demonstrations • Key websites, ArcCatalog, EPA Metadata Editor (EME) • Review questions (with prizes) • Example: what are we talking about today?

  2. Learning Objectives • After completing the introductory training, the student can: • Describe the FGDC CSDGM, what ‘compliancy’ is, and what is required for ‘compliancy’ • Describe why and how a template is used, as well as how to create a template • Describe how to use the EPA Metadata Editor (EME) • Describe the North American Profile (NAP) of ISO 19115/19139 and the relationship to the FGDC CSDGM • It is assumed that the student already understands: • What metadata is and why it is important • Additional information on these 2 topics is available at http://www.fgdc.gov/training/nsdi-training-program/online-lessons#metadata

  3. Training Structure • Overall Goal: Improve the process of developing and sharing high-quality metadata: • Easier • Faster • Better • More consistently • More often….. • Your trainers • Jessica Zichichi • jzichichi@innovateteam.com • Caroline Roberts • croberts@innovateteam.com

  4. FGDC CSDGM Overview • What is the FGDC CSDGM? • Metadata standard published in June 1994 by FGDC and updated in 1998. • Version 2 is the current US Federal Metadata standard (Executive Order 12096) • Large, but flexible standard (e.g., free text fields) • Typically exchanged in XML text format and presented using a stylesheet • More information: http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/geospatial-metadata-standards • How is it structured? • Comprised of 10 ‘sections’ • 7 major sections and 3 supporting sections • Sections contain elements • Compound Elements • Data Elements • 334 elements in the standard! • Example: • <pubinfo> • <pubplace>Washington, DC</pubplace> • <publish>U.S. Environmental Protection Agency</publish> • </pubinfo>

  5. FGDC CSDGM Structure • Major FGDC CSDGM Sections • Section 1: Identification Information • Title, abstract, purpose, currency, spatial extent, keywords, access and use constraints • Section 2: Data Quality Information • Attribute and positional accuracy, completeness, processing steps • Section 3: Spatial Data Organization • Spatial representation (point, vector, raster, or indirect methods [e.g., location]) • Section 4: Spatial Reference Information • Horizontal (and vertical if appropriate) coordinate system definition • Section 5: Entity and Attribute Information • Types of entities, their attributes, domains for attribute values (overview, detailed, or both) • Section 6: Distribution Information • Distribution contact, resource type (downloadable, live data, etc), liability, fees (if any) • Section 7: Metadata Reference Information • Metadata contact, metadata date, metadata standard used

  6. FGDC CSDGM Structure • Supporting FGDC CSDGM Sections • Section 8: Citation Information • the recommended reference to be used for the data set • Section 9: Time Period Information • information about the date and time of an event. • Section 10: Contact Information • identity of, and means to communicate with, person(s) and organization(s) associated with the data set. Example <citation> <citeinfo> <origin>USEPA, Office of Environmental Information</origin> <pubdate>2006</pubdate> <title>EPAs Web Feature Service for the Facility Registry System</title> </citeinfo> </citation>

  7. FGDC Metadata Compliancy • Example of how a supporting section works • The graphical image map (http://www.fgdc.gov/csdgmgraphical/index.html)

  8. FGDC CSDGM Structure

  9. FGDC CSDGM Structure • Metadata Content & Stylesheets Demonstration • example_stylesheet.xml

  10. Some General FGDC CSDGM Guidelines • Start metadata early in the data development process • Write an informative title (theme, place, time, purpose.) • Write an informative abstract (but don’t make it too long!) • Document constraints appropriately • Access constraints: who should be able to access the resource? • Use constraints: what are the limitations of use once the resource has been accessed? • Use keywords effectively • Think broadly and narrowly • Sometimes a specific keyword can help others find your record if you share it in a catalog • Check your metadata! • Spelling • Defaults from various tools • Accuracy

  11. Some General FGDC CSDGM Guidelines • Think about what’s important to your organization • Focusing on basics (sections 1 and 7)? • abstract, purpose, constraints, contact information • Ensuring information on data quality is present (section 2)? • positional accuracy • omissions, known errors, processing steps • Documenting spatial reference information (section 4)? • horizontal, vertical coordinate system • Ensuring that complete attribute information is present (section 5)? • Providing access to or distributing your data (section 6)? • All of the above?

  12. FGDC CSDGM Metadata Resources • Some key resources for making your metadata journey easier • FGDC CSDGM Workbook • www.fgdc.gov/metadata/documents/workbook_0501_bmk.pdf • FGDC Publications List • http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/metadata-publications-list • Metadata Quick Guide • Top Ten Metadata Errors • Institutionalizing Metadata • CSDGM Graphical Image Map • http://www.fgdc.gov/csdgmgraphical/index.html • ESRI Metadata Web Help • http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?TopicName=About_metadata • NOAA Training Materials • http://csc.noaa.gov/metadata/curriculum/modules.html

  13. FGDC CSDGM Structure • What is the FGDC CSDGM made up of? • Sections • Elements • Compound elements • All of the above • Name a section of the FGDC CSDGM and identify what is supposed to go in it. • In which section of the CSDGM would you document constraints on accessing or using your data set? • Metadata Reference Information • Identification Information • Data quality Information • Entity and Attribute Information
