Formative & Summative • Formative • Frequent assessments to measure the students grasp • It is a “midstream tool” to identify specific student misconceptions(Kahl, 2005) • Allows teachers to make decisions about next steps • Ongoing exchange of information • Referred to as Assessment For Learning • Teacher as a coach • Summative • Collect information to make a judgment • End of a period of instruction • Referred to as Assessment of Learning • Teacher as a Judge
