Vicksburg Falls • By 1863, the Union had captured almost all of the Mississippi River. • Vicksburg, Mississippi was the only remaining Confederate position to be taken.
Vicksburg Falls • General Grant puts the city under siege (cut off its’ food and supplies and bombed the city) until it surrendered. • With the capture of Vicksburg, the Confederacy had been cut in two.
The Road to Gettysburg • Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville • After Union Gen. McClellan allowedthe Confederates to slip away atAntietam, Lincoln replaced him with GeneralAmbrose Burnside.

The Road to Gettysburg • After the Fredericksburg defeat,Lincoln replaces Burnside withGeneral Joseph Hooker. • May, 1863 – Lee’s troops attacked Hooker’s forces in dense woods known as the Wilderness near Chancellorsville, VA.
The Road to Gettysburg • Lee divided his troops an repeatedly attacked the Union lines. • Lee defeated the Union troops even though his troops were outnumbered two to one. Hooker was forced to retreat.
The Road to Gettysburg • Encouraged by the victory at Chancellorsville, Lee decided to invade the North. • Moved to Pennsylvania,and headed toward Gettysburg.
The Road to Gettysburg • Day 1: July 1, 1863 • Confederates ran into Uniontroops and forced the Unionarmy to retreat to the hillssouth of Gettysburg. • Day 2: July 2, 1863 • Lee attacked the ends of the union lines(Little Round Top) but could not forcethem from their positions.
The Road to Gettysburg • Day 3: July 3, 1863 • “Pickett’s Charge” – massiveassault on the Union center. • Huge failure! About 1/3of Picketts men were killedor wounded.
The Road to Gettysburg • Gettysburg is considered a major turning point. • It was also the South’s last attempt at an offensive war. They were never able to attack on Northern soil again.
