The Thesis Statement • Should be either the first or the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. • It is best if it is the last sentence preceded by a brief overview of the time frame addressed in the question. • It presents in one or two sentences the topics to be discussed in the paragraphs to follow.

  3. Does this thesis statement ….. • Directly answer the question? • Include an argument in three categories? • Make sense? • Allow for multiple facts, reasons and examples to be used in support of each category?

  4. If you can answer yes to all questions. . • You have created a strong thesis and are ready to support it with evidence.

  6. Student Practice • Your two teenage cousins (boy and girl) are visiting you for two weeks this summer. How will you entertain them?

  7. Student Practice • You had planned to go to a friend’s party on Friday night. However, the party was cancelled because the weather turned really bad. How will you spend your Friday night?

  8. Student Practice • What are the consequences for disobeying your parents or guardians?

  9. Evaluating Thesis Statements • Sophisticated: The thesis meets the acceptable category and demonstrates insightful analysis of the question and/or argument. • Acceptable: The thesis 1) directly answers the question; 2) takes a position with regard to the question; and 3) provides organizational categories used in the essay. • Weak: The thesis is present but limited or undeveloped; may paraphrase the question; not address parts of the question; or is confused.

In your answer be sure to evaluate farmers’ responses to these changes. Evaluate the thesis statements on the hand-outs provided.
