  2. Purpose of Today’s Meeting • Tell you about advising in the school. • Review degree requirements. • Tell you about opportunities in the school.

  3. Student Responsibility • You are responsible for knowing and meeting degree requirements. • Not the student records/advising staff. • Not your mom (or dad) . • The good news is, it’s not that difficult a job.

  4. Your Academic Status • Once you’re officially in the J-school, your worksheet is updated each semester. You should have a copy. • Your updated academic worksheet will be available for you in Student Records before the next registration period. • See advising staff in the Student Records & Registration suite if you feel that information on your worksheet are inaccurate.

  5. Registering in the J-school • Check requirements under Current Students on JOMC Web site at jomc.unc.edu. Blank worksheets are there! • Decide what courses you want to take (JOMC course schedules and details are posted on our Web site – see these documents for special instructions). • Register for courses through ConnectCarolina. Some of our courses require permission of the instructor as indicated on our course schedules so contact her/him directly.

  6. AdvisingKey People to Know • Sharon Jones, Director of Student Services and Assessment. • Marla Barnes, Student Records Assistant. • Tricia Robinson, Student Records Assistant. They can assist you with registration/advising issues and all administrative student services as you navigate your way through getting the courses you need so that you graduate on time. Office Hours: M-F, 8am-5pm, year-round; No appointments.

  7. UNC-Chapel Hill Requirements • 120 credit hours to graduate. • PHYA courses do not count--but lifetime fitness courses do. Only one LFIT course counts toward the 120 hour minimum. • In order to graduate you must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 overall and in your major.

  8. JOMC Graduation Requirements • Of the 120 credits required to graduate, a minimum of 72 credits must be taken outside the school. • Of those 72 credits, at least 65 must be in Arts and Sciences. • Maximum of 48 JOMC hours.

  12. Connections • Communication Intensive (CI) course (JOMC 153) • Quantitative intensive (QI) or second quantitative reasoning (QR) course.

  13. Connections • Experiential education (EE) (JOMC 393 or JOMC 232* for public relations and strategic comm. students) • U.S. diversity (US) (JOMC 441) • North Atlantic world (NA) (HIST 128) • Beyond the North Atlantic (BN) • World before 1750 (WB) • Global issues (GL) (JOMC 446)

  14. JOMC Requirements • Usage and Grammar Test • Score of at least 70 percent required prior to graduation. • It’s offered on 12-14 times each semester and once each summer session. • Sign up in advance to take it (one week prior to test). • We offer a grammar course (register for JOMC 100 Grammar Review a 1-credit course).

  15. JOMC Requirements • For all students entering UNC-CH prior to F13, there is a minimum of 33 hours in the JOMC major. • NO grade below C- in any JOMC curriculum or specialization core class allowed; must retake • No more than one D in any JOMC immersion/elective course. • Independent studies (JOMC 296) and internships (JOMC 393) do not count toward JOMC major hours.

  16. More JOMC Requirements • State and local government Choose one from POLI 101 or POLI 405.

  17. More JOMC Requirements • You need an outside area of concentration. • At least three courses (total of 9 hours) in an outside department or school. • Can be a minor. • Can be a second major. • See records/advising staff to add a 2nd major or minor.

Second Major in Arts & Sciences • If you want to complete a second major, you can download the application form from J-school Web site. • See records/advising staff to complete. • Meet with advisor in Arts and Sciences for approval. • J-School majors do NOT have to complete Supplemental Education.

  19. A Few Words About JOMC Course Prerequisites • They must be completed BEFORE enrolling in a second course. • JOMC 153 is a prerequisite for MANY other courses.

  20. JOMC Internship Credit • JOMC 393 “Practicum” • Credit for experience during the semester or summer. • 1 credit during regular semesters and/or summer • May earn a total of 3 credits for JOMC 393. • Does not count in the 33-hour minimum for major. • Practicum is a Pass-D-Fail course. • Most students take it in senior year. • See JOMC website or Jay Eubank, director of Career Services and Special Programs, for details.

  21. Course Loads in the J-school • Minimum of 12 credits. • Special permission from Sharon Jones to take fewer than 12, or more than 18.

  22. Some J-school Courses Meet Longer Than Others • JOMC 153 is a 3-credit course that meets in class for 5 hours a week. But, almost all work is done in class. • Visual communication courses typically meet for longer periods of time because many, if not most, include lab time in the regular course.

  23. A Word About the Course Drop Policy • Within the period to drop classes (first eight weeks of semester). • No permission needed if you don’t drop below 12 hours. • After drop deadline you need permission from senior associate dean—you must show documented medical problem or change in work status. A “bad grade” is not a legitimate reason. Petition forms are available in Student Records. Get that first.

  24. Graduation Requirements • Apply the semester BEFORE you plan to graduate—and before registration for your last semester. • Stay informed and updated on your standing to make sure to complete all your requirements. • Worksheet. • JOMC Web page (jomc.unc.edu). • Sharon Jones, Marla Barnes, Tricia Robinson.
