  2. WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA • The common man makes up the “people” • People were creating this Constitution • The new gov’t was created by the people

  3. IN ORDER TO FORM A MORE PERFECT UNION 1ST PURPOSE • The Framers did not like the Articles of Confed., so they scrap them • They were striving for something better • Wanted the new gov’t to be better • The Constitution would be more perfect • Not perfect, but more perfect

  4. ESTABLISH JUSTICE 2ND PURPOSE • People wanted a nation with level playing field • Wanted courts that were fair • Trade within and outside of the borders of the country would be fair • Fair trial, equal treatment under the law • We know discrimination exists, but we strive for justice

  5. INSURE DOMESTIC TRANQUILITY 3RD PURPOSE • Did not want citizens to revolt against one another or the new gov’t • Keep peace among everyone • Did not want any rebellions

  6. PROVIDE FOR THE COMMON DEFENSE 4TH PURPOSE • New nation was fearful of attacks from all sides • No state was capable of fending off attack from land or sea by itself • Needed to come together to form a military where they could defend the nation

  7. PROMOTE THE GENERAL WELFARE 5TH PURPOSE • Allow every state and every citizen to benefit from what the gov’t could provide • Strong national gov’t would be the beginning to expansion of land, industry, and investment • GOV’T IS SERVANT TO ITS CITIZENS

SECURE THE BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY 6TH PURPOSE • Wanted a gov’t where citizens could look forward to being free as opposed to looking out for the interests of a king. • Wanted future generations of Americans to enjoy same freedoms • Freedoms= speech, religion, peace, press, assembly, happiness, prosperity, property

  9. ORDAIN AND ESTABLISH THE CONSTITION for the United States of America CONCLUSION • Restates the name of the nation adopting the Constitution • “ordained” reminds us of the higher power- which is the people, not a king or single person • “established” reminds us that is replaces the Articles of Conf.
