BILL OF RIGHTSThe Bill of Rights is the collective name given to the first ten amendments to our U.S. Constitution ***These amendments protect out natural rights of life, liberty,and property.The amendments were introduced by James Madison and served as a compromise between the Federalists and Anti -Federalists for ratification of the U.S. Constitution in 1789.

PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION • The Preamble to the Constitution is an introductory statement about the Constitutions fundamental purposes and guidelines. • “We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, establish justice, insure domestic Tranquility, • Provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberties to Ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish the Constitution of the United States of America.”

  3. 1st AMENDMENT • THE FIRST AMENDMENT PROTECTS OUR FREEDOM OF SPEECH, RELIGION, PRESS, AND THE RIGHT TO PETITION OUR GOVERNMENT.

  4. 2ND AMENDMENT • WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS IN ORDER TO PROTECT OURSELVES AGAINST TYRANNICAL GOVERNMENTS, FOR A NATURAL SELF DEFENSE, AND IN ORDER TO FORM AND MAINTAIN A MILITIA.

  5. 3RD AMENDMENT • PROHIBITS THE FORCING OF QUARTERING SOLDIERS IN OUR HOMES DURING A TIME OF WAR

  6. 4TH AMENDMENT • PROTECTS AGAINST UNREASONABLE SEARCHES AND SEIZURES AND SETS OUT REQUIREMENTS FOR SEARCH WARRANTS BASED ON PROBABLE CAUSE.

  7. 5TH AMENDMENT • SETS OUT RULES FOR INDICTMENT BY A Grand JURY AND EMINENT DOMAIN, PROTECTS THE RIGHT OF DUE PROCESS, AND PROHIBITS SELF- INCRIMINATION AND DOUBLE JEOPARDY

  8. 6th AMENDMENT • PROTECTS OUR RIGHTS TO SPEEDY AND PUBLIC TRIALS BY JURIES, AND A RIGHT TO KNOW YOUR ACCUSERS, TO CONFRONT YOUR ACCUSERS, AND TO OBTAIN WITNESSES AND RETAIN COUNSEL.

  9. 7TH AMENDMENT • PROVIDES THE RIGHT TO A TRIAL BY JURY IN CIVIL CASES

  10. 8TH AMENDMENT • PROHIBITS EXCESSIVE FINES AND BAIL AS WELL AS CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT

  11. 9TH AMENDMENT • PROTECTS RIGHTS NOT SPECIFIED IN THE CONSTITUTION

  12. 10TH AMENDMENT • LIMITS THE POWERS OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT REGULATED TO IT BY OUR U.S. CONSTITUTION
