  2. What is Healthwatch? • Healthwatch is the local, public led, independent group that make sure people’s voices are heard in decisions about health and social care services. • We act as your champion to help people speak up about the services they receive. • Our aim is to put local people at the heart of all services and make sure their voices are heard.

  3. The Healthwatch Network • Healthwatch Portsmouth is one of 152 Local Healthwatchs’ across the country. • All these groups connect with one central organisation called Healthwatch England who report to parliament and who work closely with the Care Quality Commission, the body that inspects and monitors health and care services.

  4. Healthwatch: The Consumer Champion • We talk to local people about what they want to see improved locally and also aboutthings that are going really well. • We offer support and information to people who don’t where to go for information and support with their own health or care. • We support people that want to make a complaint against the NHS but need some help. • We have a seat on the Health and Wellbeing Board, a board that makes important decisions about local services and priorities in Portsmouth. • We can enter premises to view services in certain circumstances. • We can demand responses from services when we have an issue that has been raised by local people.

  5. Research • We have strong links with the University of Portsmouth and other organisations in the city to help us build up a credible body of evidence to back up our research. • We want to empower local people to do their own research projects and so offer community research courses that anyone can get involved in. We also support people to do their own research projects on subjects that they believe need to be looked at.

  6. How are we governed? • We are a membership led organisation. • Currently our board is made of up 8 members of the Healthwatch network and 3 advisors from partner organisations. • The board makes decisions about what Healthwatch should focus on and what it can do to make a difference. • We also have a staff team of 3. • Board meetings happen often and anyone can attend.

  7. How can you get involved? • Join our network • You can be as involved as you want to be: • Network member – get our newsletter and hear • about things we are doing, share your views. • Volunteer with us – opportunities include, social • media help, engagement events. • Community researcher – receive free training to do your own research on issues that concern you. • Healthwatch Governor – get involved in the decisions and be involved in sub groups and governance meetings.
