  3. FIFA Structure • Controlled by a congress • Made up of representatives from each nation • Congress elects president and top officials • Made up of 6 different confederations • Recognizes 208 national associations • Each association gets one vote in congress.

  4. Tournament • Held every 4 years • Biggest single sporting competition in the world • 2014 preliminary competition had 204 entries across 6 continents • World cup finals involves 32 teams • Last World Cup 200 teams played 853 games for 31 qualifying spots

  5. World Cup Facts • 2nd time Brazil has hosted World Cup • 19 World Cups to date • 8 different national teams have won • Brazil has won 5 times • Participated in every World cup • Most widely viewed sporting event • Broadcast in 204 countries on 245 channels

Potential Host? •  On 3 June 2003, CONMEBOL announced that the following countries wanted to host the 2014 World Cup: • Argentina • Brazil • Colombia • By 17 March 2004, the CONMEBOL associations voted unanimously to adopt Brazil as their sole candidate. • Brazil formally declared its candidacy in December 2006 and Colombia did so as well a few days later. • The Argentina bid never materialized. • On 11 April 2007, Colombia withdrew its bid making Brazil the only official candidate to host the World Cup in 2014.

  7. Why Brazil? • Brazil eventually won the hosting rights for the 2014 FIFA World • after Colombia withdrew its bid on 11 April 2007. • The Brazilian bid was officially launched on 13 December 2006 by Ricardo Teixeira.

  8. 2014 World Cup 12 cities will host the games 1.2 billion in construction and upgrades to stadiums 5 Stadiums will receive upgrades (Belo Horizonte, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Porto Alegre, and Rio de Janeiro) 7 stadiums will be new (Sao Paulo, Salvador, Recife, Natal, Manaus, Cuiaba, andBrasilia)

Infrastructure – Airports, Telecom • INFRAERO announced on August 2009 3.1 billion U.S for airport upgrades • 55% will go to Rio De Janeiro and Sao Paulo airports • 500,000 spectators that will take between 6 and 14 flights-Brazilian General Aviation Association • Billions on spent on internet backbone upgrade and expanded fixed and mobile communications

Transportation • 6.4 billion U.S. on public transportation • 8 of the 12 cities will receive either a metro, monorail, or light rail • Remaining 4 will receive a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system • Rio will receive a 26 km transit bus corridor • “the biggest investment in Rios’s public transportation in last 30 years”-Mayor Eduardo Paes

  11. News Coverage • International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro. • The IBC, in 2010, had 179 broadcasters from more than 70 countries, on-site productions with 13,000 staff members in South Africa.

The International Olympic Committee(IOC) • Established in 1894 in Lausanne, Switzerland • Responsible for organizing the modern Summer and Winter Olympic games • Countries bid the committee to host the games • Often includes attempting to sway the decision by any means possible • Members vote by secret ballot

  16. Why Chicago Lost • Only speculations • Overly restrictive passport and visa policy • Anti-Americanism • Early assumptions that Chicago would make it to the final round • Tensions between IOC USOC

  18. Finance • Application and Candidature expenses alone US $49 million • Entire expenditure expected to be upwards of US $12 billion • Both Olympics and World Cup will create hundreds of thousands of jobs and further stimulate Brazil’s already booming economy

Economy • The U.S. will invest $14.4 billion in Rio 2016 Olympic project. • The expected impact on Brazil’s economy is $51.1 billion between 2009 and 2027. • Direct investment between 2009-2016 is $30 billion, indirect investment $90 billion. • In the period before the games 120 thousand jobs will be created each year.

  20. Benefits of Hosting Olympics • Attracts investors. • Infrastructure investments. • Base materials, engineering, construction. • Tourism.

  21. Infrastructure • Must be at least 49,750 rooms to meet IOC standards • Will build 9 new sporting facilities and refurbish and use 25 existing facilities • Will build 150 km of new highway to connect Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport and Olympic zones

  22. Olympic Tower • A welcome tower. • Will use solar energy to pump water during the day. • Water will power turbines which will provide energy during the night.

  23. Security • High crime rates. • Shootouts are not uncommon. • Violence in subways. • Rio to spend $530 million on security in Rio’s slums – favelas.

Discussion Questions • What future economic benefits will hosting both of these events provide to Brazil? • Does hosting the Olympics and World cup force Brazil to invest in its infrastructure when otherwise wouldn’t? • What possible benefits does the U.S. hope to gain from investing in Brazil?
