  3. Introduction to the Royal Society

    The Royal Society is a Fellowship of 1,450 outstanding individuals from all areas of science, engineering and medicine, who form a global scientific network of the highest calibre. The Fellowship is supported by a permanent staff of over 140 with responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Society and its activities. The Society has three roles: as the UK academy of science, as a learned Society, and as a funding agency.

    The Society’s strategic priorities emphasise its commitment to the highest quality science, to curiosity-driven research, and to the development and use of science for the benefit of society.     The Royal Society is committed to innovative science wherever it is found. The Society will work with all those doing science in industry, the public sector and universities. World class research and development in UK industry is essential for transforming innovative ideas into commercially successful products, economic growth and securing the science base.

    The Society highlighted innovation through a Year of Science and Industry, launched in 2012. Brought together industry, academia and the public across a range of events: Scientific meetings Prize lectures Workshops Industrial Symposia Contributing to a better understanding of industrial research and development and to strengthen links.

  9. Industry Fellowships

    Established in 1979 in partnership with the Science Research Council Running in its current format since 1994 Current Industry Fellows: 54 The scheme is funded by the Royal Society, EPSRC, BBSRC, NERC, Rolls-Royce plc and BP

  10. Industry Fellowships

    Purpose To enhance knowledge transfer in science and technology between those in industry and those in academia in the UK. It is anticipated that fellows will establish personal and corporate links between academia and industry in the UK as a foundation for their long-term future development. Eligibility have a PhD or be of equivalent standing in their profession hold a permanent post in a university, not-for-profit research organisation or industry in the UK Value and Tenure Basic salary while on secondment. Research expenses, up to £2,000 per year. 2yrs Full Time, 4 yrs Part-time.

  11. The Royal Society and Society of Chemical Industry PhD studentships

    Collaboration with the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) to provide some Industry Fellows with funding for a PhD studentship. Applicants from academia may apply for a PhD studentship as part of their Industry Fellowship if their research is: Within the remit of the SCI Neglected science The source of this funding is the legacy of Dr Sydney Andrew a former Fellow of the Royal Society and Member of the Society of Chemical Industry.

    Online network of former and current Industry Fellows formed in November 2012 Brings together researchers from academia and industry with an interest in translational research to: Share learning Disseminate good practice Promote strategic debate Develop opportunities for cross-sector collaboration

  15. Newton International Fellowships

    Purpose Provides the opportunity for the best early stage post-doctoral researchers from all over the world to work within the UK. Eligibility have a PhD, 0-7 years postdoctoral experience. working outside the UK, not hold UK citizenship be competent in oral and written English have a clearly defined and mutually-beneficial research proposal agreed with a UK host scientist. Value and Tenure £24,000 p.a. for subsistence costs, £8,000 p.a. research expenses, £2,000 for relocation expenses.

  16. International Exchanges

    Purpose For scientists in the UK to undertake a collaboration with scientists overseas through either a one-off visit or bilateral travel. Eligibility have a PhD, by the time the funding starts. hold a fixed or permanent contract at an eligible organisation for the duration of the project. be based in the respective countries at the time of the application. travel can only take place between the UK and a country where the overseas collaborator is based. Value and Tenure up to £3,000 for one-off travel, 3 month period. up to £6000 for multiple visits, completed within 1 year. up to £12,000 for multiple visits, completed within 2 years.

  17. JSPS Fellowships

    Purpose For early career UK scientists to conduct research in Japan. Eligibility have a PhD, 0-6yrs post-doctoral experience. be a citizen of the UK or European Union. have a research proposal agreed with a Japanese host scientist. Value and Tenure subsistence funding, settling-in allowance, return air ticket and insurance cover. 12- 24 months.

  18. Wolfson Research Merit Award

    Purpose Provides universities with additional support to help them recruit or retain outstanding scientists to the UK. Eligibility hold a permanent post at a university in the UK or have received a firm offer to take effect from the start of the award. their basic salary fully funded by the university. Value and Tenure The award is a salary enhancement, usually in the range of £10,000 to £30,000 per annum. 5 years funding
