  1. Argentina:A history By Taylor Harris

  2. Where? Argentina is a country located in the south-eastern part of South America.

  3. Ethnic composition Unlike many other Latin American countries, Argentina has an extremely high population of people solely of European descent. 97% of the population is of European descent while the remaining 3% of the population consists of mestizos, Amerindians, and other racial mixtures.

  7. Languages Because the Spanish conquered the area now known as Argentina during the conquests, Spanish is the official language of Argentina. Along with many other widely spoken languages, including Italian, indigenous languages such as Araucanian, Quechua, and Guarani are still spoken in parts of Argentina.

  8. Age distribution In Argentina, people between the ages of 0 and 14 comprise about 25.4% of the total population. People between 15 and 64 represent 63.6% of the population. The remaining 11% of the population consists of people aged 65 and above.

  9. economics In 2002, Argentina’s economy collapsed and its government went into default. Between the years of 2003-2007, Argentina’s economy witnessed a GDP growth of over 8% per year, a 5% growth in 2008, 3% decrease in growth in 2009, and a 7.5% increase in 2010. Although the government is working to successfully rebuild the economy, Argentina’s unemployment rate in 2010 was 7.9% and its 2010 GINI index was 41.4, 53rd in the world. The wealthiest 10% of the population have 29.5% of household income while the poorest 10% only have 1.7% of household income.

  10. Collapse In 2002, the Argentinean government went into default. As such, the economy collapsed. Although Argentina has rebuilt its economy rather quickly, its recent economic decline has deterred investors from foreign countries from investing in Argentinean businesses.

  15. Government Argentina gained independence from Spain in 1816. Since then, its government has morphed into the democratic republic that it is today. Jose Francisco de San Martin: his military tactics were imperative to Argentina’s fight for independence.

  16. Slavery Slavery, while practiced in Argentina, was not as prevalent as it was in places like Brazil. Of the slaves in Argentina, most of the women lived in the cities while the men lived in rural areas. In 1813, Argentina’s government declared the slave trade illegal and subsequently abolished slavery altogether in 1853. Argentinean descendant of two slaves.

  17. Falklands War The Falkland Islands, located 400 miles from the coast of Argentina, were the cause of war between Argentina and Britain beginning in 1982. The Falkland Islands, conquered by the British in 1833, were of special interest to the Argentineans after 1833 only because they wanted to reclaim the lands from the British(although the islands provided few natural resources or commodities). The war resulted in 250 British casualties compared to 746 Argentinean casualties. In June 1982, Argentina surrendered to the British.

  19. Eva peron Eva, also known as Evita, was married to Juan Peron who became the Argentine president in 1946. Evita was an advocate for the poor, as she came from a poor background herself, and for women’s education. She helped build many schools and hospitals while she was First Lady and was considered by most to be Argentina’s first female politician. In 1951, Eva Peron died of cancer. She was the inspiration for the play Evita.

  21. Current issues Argentina is experiencing a drought that has, so far, been the worst drought in the past 50 years. As such, it is affecting wheat growth which, in turn, is affecting beef production. These shortages are starting to affect the economy and food availability.

  23. Current issues In Argentina, Muslims have not always been afforded the same freedoms as Christians. Recently, the government passed a law that allows Muslim women to wear a hajibin public. This law is leading to social progress and equality for Muslims in Argentina.

  25. Current issues Argentina is experiencing extreme deforestation and is also experiencing a decrease in safe drinking water because of pollution. Not only do deforestation and pollution have adverse effects on the environment, but they are also starting to affect humans and their ability to access necessary, life-sustaining resources.

  27. tango Although the exact origin of the Argentine Tango is unknown, it is widely accepted that the Tango embodies a fusion of African and Argentinean cultures.

  28. U.S.-Argentine relations The U.S.-Argentine relationship historically has been a friendly one. The US and Argentina share similar ideals and beliefs on modern-day slavery, drugs, and terrorism. Unfortunately, this relationship was jeopardized in February of this year with the discovery of an American cargo plane in Argentina containing weapons and morphine, items that Argentineans associate with terrorist activities.
