This presentation by Prasad Calyam at OARnet discusses the latest trends in networking research as of December 2004. It highlights emerging topics such as high-performance TCP, network security, and wireless networking while reflecting on traditional QoS research's decline. The presentation also reviews key conferences discussing these research topics and presents tools developed for network performance measurement. Key areas include Internet architecture, congestion management, and measurement infrastructures within the broader context of ongoing research efforts.

What's happening in Networking Research Today?Prasad Calyam, OARnetOARTech Presentation, Dec 8th, 2004
Overview • Introduction • What are the networking research topics being discussed these days? • Networking Research at OARnet! • In which conferences are topics on networking research being discussed? • Conclusion
What are the networking research topics being discussed these days? Traditional Network QoS research (E.g. Diffserv, Intserv) has become very quiet! • High-performance TCP • To support bulk file transfers and resource sharing amongst the Grid Communities (e.g. HENP, VLBI communities) • Fast TCP, XCP, Non-friendly TCP with minimum rate control (DSTP) • Buffer size issues, MTU issues • Internet Geometry/Architecture • Topology, Tomography, Routing Design • Network Performance Measurement and Characterization • Bandwidth estimation tools, Routing stability, MPLS, Congestion management, Network Troubleshooting techniques, Next-generation Measurement Infrastructures
What are the networking research topics being discussed these days? (2) • Wireless Networking • WLANs, Cellular Networks, Sensor Networks, Adhoc Networks • Network Security • DDoS traceback and defense mechanisms, Access Authentication and Authorization (AAA) middleware • Many others… • Optical Networks, Overlay Networks, Peer-to-Peer Networks, Multimedia Gaming Networks, Multicast Networks, Satellite Networks
OARnet Networking Research • “H.323 Beacon” (Open source – runs on Windows and Linux) • A tool to measure, monitor and thus troubleshoot the performance of an H.323 Videoconference sessions • Official troubleshooting tool for Internet2 Commons and Megaconferences- The world’s largest Internet Conferences • Presented at ACM Network Troubleshooting Workshop, Sepember 2004 • Modeling Voice and Video Traffic over IP • We setup a worldwide testbed involving 26 sites and collected over 300 traffic traces • Our results demonstrate the impact of various audio and video end-point codecs, packet size distributions, network jitter, lost and re-ordered packets on the end-user perception of audiovisual quality • Presented at Passive and Active Measurement Workshop, April 2004
OARnet Networking Research (2) • “ActiveMon” (Open source – runs on Windows and Linux) • A scalable Network Measurement Framework for setting up active measurements along multiple network paths • Developed as part of the BORTFN MeasurementProject • Understanding Internet Backbone Network Characteristics • Studying empirical bottlenecks – cause and resulting performance issues • Using ActiveMon to study Internet Traffic patterns on Campus-level, Regional-level and National-level network backbone paths • To be presented at IEEE Testbeds and Research Infrastructures for the DEvelopment of NeTworks and COMmunities (TRIDENTCOM), February 2004
In which conferences are topics on networking research being discussed? • 3 sets of communities that address Networking Research • Network Engineering Research Community • Care more about practice • Focus on short-term issues • E.g. I want to setup IPv6 with XYZ specifications. What sequence of tasks work most effectively? • Work mostly on real-world systems • Network Development Research Community • Care about both theory and practice • Focus on reasonably long-term issues • E.g. How do I extend TCP with the novel CDE technique so that it will improve the performance of RST type of network flows in the Internet? • Work on simulators and real-world systems • Theoretical Research Community • Care more about theory • Focus on very long-term issues • E.g. If I use PQR technique to detect DDoS attacks which involves changing A-Z of today, will the network fairness improve? • Work mostly on network simulators
In which conferences are topics on networking research being discussed?(2) • Refereed • Focus on high-impact Issues • SIGCOMM, HOTNETS, SIGMETRICS, … • Focus on wide-range of Issues • INFOCOM, GLOBECOM, ICC, ICN, Networking, ICDCS • Focus on area-specific Issues • Mobicom, PAM, IMC, NOSSDAV, SECON, NetTs, TRIDENTCOM, Global IPv6 Forum… • Non-Refereed • NANOG, Internet2/ESCC Joint Techs • Webinars • E.g. www.lightreading.com
