Join the Keck School of Medicine's immersive Spring Break trip to Nicaragua in February 2008, designed for first-year medical students. This unique program offers hands-on experience in international medicine, an understanding of the healthcare challenges in Nicaragua, and insight into relevant pathologies. Students will build academic relationships with local physicians, explore Nicaraguan culture, and travel the country. Accommodations, airfare, and travel are covered, with a preference for Spanish speakers. Apply by October 14, 2008!

Nicaragua Spring Break Trip Keck School of Medicine February 2008
Trip Objectives • To expose 1st year medical students to the field of International Medicine in a hands on learning environment • To gain an understanding of the social and economic challenges facing the healthcare system in Nicaragua • To learn about the particular pathology and disease processes most relevant to Nicaragua and Central America • To cultivate the growing academic relationship between Keck Students and the physicians, residents and medical students of the hospital Roberto Calderon • To learn about various aspects of Nicaraguan culture • To explore the country through tourism
Program Specifics • The program began in 2007 and was organized by Maria Peralta a current Keck 4th year student. The itinerary, tours and accommodations are arranged through a group called Learning in Community with input from previous students. • This year the program will fund 10-12 1st year students • Room, board, airfare and travel throughout the country are all included • Preference will be given to students proficient in the Spanish language if applications exceed the number of spots alotted
