  3. What is a Gap Year?? • Time taken out of education or work for a purpose • It’s rarely a ‘year’ • You can take a ‘mini gap’ in the summer between school and University/career • Or at any time in your life!

  4. Why Take a Gap Year?? • Break from education • May never have a chance to take a ‘year out’ again • Earn some money to give you some financial security for when you start Higher Education • Take a year out to decide what future you want for yourself and return refreshed and more focused • Real adventure • Enhance your CV

  5. Things to bear in mind... • Year older at University and starting a job • Check with your University course. Are they happy for you to take a year out? • Will you return to studying? • 90% of students who take a gap year return to Higher Education within a year • University studies show those who took a gap year achieved higher grades than those who did not. • 60% of gap year students said that they took their academics more seriously after taking a year out from education • 60% of gap year students said that a year out helped them decide their course and realise their future career direction • Across the board 20% of 1st year University students drop out. 4% were those who took a year out • Gap years cost money! • Gap years must be constructive

  9. Costs… • Independent travel can cost a lot and easily spiral out of control • Set yourself a budget • Think about raising money through sponsorship • If with an organisation make sure you find out what is NOT included
