  1. “Lecture to a Missionary” speech by Red Jacket • Speaker? – Red Jacket – Seneca chief • Occasion? – Rev. Cram’s request to preach about Christianity • Audience?- Rev. Cram • Purpose? – States his case in response to request • Subject? Freedom of religion/Tone? Respectful, thoughtful and a bit sarcastic

  2. Question 2. • How would you describe R.J.’s attitude toward Reverend Cram and his proposal?

  3. Red Jacket’s attitude toward the reverend is both respectful and straightforward. He continuously refers to him as “brother” and even “friend.” He expresses appreciation for the opportunity to be heard as an equal. Since the reverend has traveled quite far, Red Jacket states that he doesn’t “wish to detain” him. This respectful introduction allows the Native American to then present his reasons in a direct and logical manner.

  4. Question 3. In your own words, explain Red Jacket’s reasons for not converting to Reverend Cram’s religion. Which of these reasons seems most persuasive to you?

  5. LIST REASONS • He claimed that his people already had religion. • He has no basis of trust, for there were many wrongs done to his people by the white man. • He cannot understand why the white man argues over religion. • He believes that God would have given them the “book” directly. • He suspects that the Natives would be asked for money. • Since God made them look and behave differently, wouldn’t He have also expected them to worship Him differently?

  6. Write the paragraph with information you have listed! Write a topic sentence. Eliminate words that are repetitive. Use transitions. Combine sentences with related ideas. Write a closing sentence.

  7. Red Jacket offered several reasons why he and his people would not convert to the Reverend’s religion. To begin, he has no basis of trust, for there were many wrongs done to his people by the white man. In addition, he cannot understand why the white man argues over religionand believes that God would have given them the “book” directly. Since God made them look and behave differently, he suggested that God might have also expected them to worship Him differently. Most importantly, He claimed that his people already had their own religion.
