  2. General info • A newspaper is a scheduled publication containing news of current events, informative articles, diverse features, editorials, and advertising. It usually is printed on relatively inexpensive, low-grade paper such as newsprint. • Most traditional papers also feature an editorial page containing editorials written by an editor and columns that express the personal opinions of writers. The newspaper is typically funded by paid subscriptions and advertising.

There are more than 1400 newspapers published all across Pakistan. • These range from countrywide to district wide editions as well as morning and evening editions. • The most widely read newspapers are in Urdu such as Jang,Nawaiwaqt etc. • The famous english ones are Dawn,TheNews,Express Tribune etc.

  4. Local language newspapers • Punjabi: Khabraan • Sindhi: Kaawish,Sach,Shaam • Pushto: Qudrat

Types of newspapers • Tabloid: In the technical sense, tabloid refers to a type of newspaper that typically measures 11 X 17 inches and is five columns across, narrower than a broadsheet newspaper. Since tabloids are smaller, their stories tend to be shorter than those found in broadsheets. • Broadsheets: Broadsheet refers to the most common newspaper format. broadsheet papers tend to employ a traditional approach to news that emphasizes in-depth coverage and a sober tone in articles and editorials.

  7. Advantages of newspapers • The advantages of reading the newspaper are good in many ways. For instance, you can increase you neologies by reading the newspaper. You can also find information around world. It has something for everyone. • Many people buy newspaper just to read the advertisement from the restaurants, movies, subway and discount stores. •  You will learn a lot about current events and general knowledge.

Disadvantages of newspapers • The disadvantage of reading the newspaper is the wastage of time as many articles are very detailed. • Paper is wasted which in turn harms the environment as trees are cut down. • Generally declining readership. •  Readers don’t see ads – most studies show less than 50% of newspaper readers recall.

Newspapers as a source of information • A newspaper is not only a source of information, it’s a storehouse of information. • Newspapers bring us a selection of the news from around the world. • Most importantly there are the advertisement • All these are carefully written, clearly organized, and attractively presented in a newspaper.  • You will be amazed at the type of jobs that are available in a newspaper office.

  10. Jihadi Publications • The media had played an important role during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in the 1980s. The manner in which the media projected the conflict boosted the image of the Mujahideen. • Getting inspiration from this role of the media, different militant groups launched their own media products during the war, which not only helped them attract financial and human resources but also propagated their ideologies and promoted their concept of jihad. • Examples: the Jamaatud-Da’waa (Lashkar-e-Taiba), TehrikKhuddam-ul-Islam (Jaish-e-Muhammad)

  11. These publications carry calls for the Muslim ummah to stand united against enemies of Islam. The US and other western countries are shown as weakening in the face of jihad by Muslims. Anti-west tirades and propaganda is a common feature of these publications. • Now there are more than 60 jihadi publication in Pakistan.
