  3. Purpose of Technology Technology • Technology extends our abilities to change the world: • to cut, shape, or put together materials; • to move things from one place to another; and to reach farther with our hands, voices, and senses. • In other words it makes our lives “easier”.

  4. Question "How do the examples of technology you wroteallow people to shape or change the world?"

  5. Question What are the by-products of technology?

  6. Possible Solutions to By-Products/Issues?

  7. Dump or Recycle Like anything, technology eventually wears out when people use it. When equipment becomes old or out of date, or performs at less than full capacity, people are challenged to figure out what to do with it.

  8. Activity: Looking at an Item of Technology

  9. The Computer The computer, invented in 1834 by Charles Babbage it is still being refined today. Before: • Large • Black and white • Only words no Picture Now • Small • Color • 4 D • Sound

  10. Question • Can you trace changes and refinements in those inventions? • Can you think of an invention that changed the way we work and live?

Technology Essay • Topics may include: • Medicine • Vaccines • Computers • Travel • Food • Entertainment • Robots • Write a one page essay typed (time’s roman, size 12, double spaced), on how science, technology and society are related. • Express how one impacts the other. Using specific examples, talk about advantages and disadvantages. What solutions do you propose?

Do Now • Select a common, non-electric household item that you believe is important. • Answer the following Questions: • What need does this item fill? • What do you think the first one looked like? • How did it change? • How could it still be improved? • What might this item look like in the future? (Draw a sketch.)
