6. Jacob Riis • Danish Immigrant • Police reporter for the New York Tribune • 1890 published “How the Other Half Lives” • Reformer-he used his talents to expose the living conditions of the poor. (the overcrowded, filthy tenements in New York City) • He used photos to help expose the conditions along with his book.

Jane Addams • Dedicated herself to helping the many poor immigrants at eh turn of the century. • After college, she started along with a friend, started the Chicago Hull House: a settlement house • Had tow purposes: help poor immigrants and provide benefits for middle class • End Child labor, improve sanitation conditions, advance education for everyone, helped with the sick and other social services.
