In the PHENIX Computing Meeting on April 12, 2000, Jeffery T. Mitchell and Jerome Lauret discussed the development of a new public relations event display for PHENIX. The presentation focused on the need for a visually appealing event display to first showcase data effectively, noting that existing tools like ROOT were not visually satisfactory. While challenges remain in matching input models and meeting deadlines, innovative solutions such as Pov-Ray were introduced to enhance functionality and aesthetics, with quick processing times on personal computers.

Old Birdseye Event Display • OpenGL-based • Never developed fully • Input model not matched to DSTs PHENIX Computing Meeting - Jeffery T. Mitchell (BNL) - 4/12/00
A New PHENIX Public-Relations Display • When first data comes, STAR will be sure to get an event display to the media. • First impressions are important. We should be there, too. • In offline, we don’t currently have a package that will do the job. ROOT will show events, but it isn’t that pretty. • Kyle’s software won’t yet work on the central arm, and is unlikely to be there in time. • So, here is another solution... Pov-Ray Based Event Display • Run the Reconstruction chain as would be done normally. • A ROOT macro has been written to extract the coordinate and track information from the DST files. • The output of the ROOT macro is a Pov-Ray include file that can be processed in Pov-Ray. • The detector geometry is hard-coded in a separate file. • Processing time in Pov-Ray is about 2 minutes on my 450 MHz PC.
