  1. Alligator Magic A Story about the game “Watch Out for Alligators” Illustrated by: Cathy Smith Written by: Samantha Illerbrun&KaelynOberle

  2. A Note to Teachers, Parents, and Caregivers Why health literacy? Health literacy is an important aspect of a child’s physical development and future physical well-being. It provides a solid understanding of why children need to be active, and stay active for the rest of their lives. It also allows them to develop fundamental skills and physical growth, both of which are beneficial as they mature through life. Why is this game in writing form? The purpose of this book is to encourage children to be active as early as possible. This book is in written form in order to create an imaginative way for kids to understand how to play the game of “Watch out for Alligators.”

  3. After a long day of exploring for fairies in the Magical Forest, Jane, Paul, Rick, and Rose searched for the Enchanted Swamp they had to cross in order to get home. 1

  4. Not paying attention to where they were walking, the four explorers became lost. Though they reached the Enchanted Swamp, they could not find the bridge. “This swamp stretches for miles—the bridge could be anywhere!” exclaimed Jane. 2

  5. “Let’s walk through the swamp,” said Rose. “It doesn’t look too deep.” The four friends entered the water, and began walking towards the other side of the Enchanted Swamp. 3

  6. However, they quickly learned that they weren’t the only ones in the water—two magical green alligators emerged to the surface! The four friends started to panic. 4

  7. Just then, Paul noticed rocks that the friends could hop onto. Paul, Jane, and Rose successfully jumped onto the rocks with two feet. However, Rick was only able to get on a rock with one foot, and an alligator wrapped it’s tail around his leg. 5

  8. POOF! Paul turned into an alligator—teeth, scales, tail, and all! 6

  9. Although Paul was sad that he was no longer able to explore the Magical Forest with his friends, he realized that being an alligator wasn’t so bad. He and the other two alligators tried to catch the rest of his friends. 7

  10. The longer Jane, Rose, and Paul stood on the rocks, the hotter their feet got because of the sun. The three friends could only stay on the rocks for five seconds before their feet got too hot. Therefore, they quickly jumped to the next rocks they could see. 8

  11. Jane and Paul successfully landed on new rocks. Rose, though, noticed her shoe was untied, and she knelt down to tie it. This made her feet extremely hot. 9

  12. Because her feet were hot, Rose jumped in the river to cool off. 10

  13. As she was letting her feet cool off, an alligator wrapped it’s tail around her legs! 11

  14. POOF! Rose magically turned into an alligator too! 12

  15. At first, Rose was sad, but she too realized that being an alligator wasn’t so bad, and she joined the rest of the alligators in their attempt to turn Jane and Paul into alligators. 13

  16. With four alligators now in the swamp, Jane and Rick needed to be extra careful crossing the water. 14

  17. After working together to ensure they did not get caught by the alligators, they successfully made it across the Enchanted Swamp! 15

  18. The alligators felt bad that Rose and Rick could not return home with their friends. Because Jane and Paul made it across the Enchanted Swamp safely, the alligators agreed to turn Rose and Rick back into humans. 16

  19. The friends happily told the alligators they would visit them from time to time, and tell them all about their adventures in the Magical Forest. They then waved goodbye to their new friends from the Enchanted Swamp, and continued their walk home. 17

  20. This narrative book, based on SaskSport’s game “Watch Out For Alligators,” is called “Alligator Magic.” This book is a story is about four friends who lose their way home after exploring the Magical Forest. They must enter the Enchanted Swamp where two magical alligators live and consequently make it difficult for the four friends who are trying to return home. This story and game helps children to develop and demonstrate jumping and landing skills, and learn to live an active life.  Alligator Magic Written by Samantha Illerbrun and KaelynOberle Illustrated by Cathy Smith KaelynOberlewas born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and grew up on her family farm outside of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She is a first-year student at the University of Regina and she is currently enrolled in the Faculty of Science with an undecided major. Samantha Illerbrunwas born in 1994 in Medicine Hat, Alberta, and raised in the small town of Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. She is currently in her first year at the University of Regina, and is working towards a degree in Kinesiology and Health Studies.
