A Brief History • Sits on largest delta in the world • Abundance of natural disasters: drought, earthquakes, flooding, cyclones, landslides, etc. • One of the most crowded places on earth • Very few rights for women • Agriculture employs majority, but unemployment is a big problem • Contains the third largest population of poor people • Majority of population is undereducated and illiterate

Malaria Control Project • Three sections: • Epidemiology: control of malaria • Entomology: study of mosquitoes • Central Malaria Reference Laboratory: studies to improve treatment and prevention • Health, education and development services • Provide quality diagnosis and treatment • Promote the use of insecticide treated nets and distribute them

Malaria Control Project • Economy improves substantially • Agriculture, tourism, harvesting and business development in endemic areas that people previously avoided • Educated people pass on knowledge and continue project • Life expectancy improves (less death, sickness and starvation) • Education and literacy improve • Poverty is fought and reduced • Poverty is linked directly with malaria. Getting rid of malaria means decreasing poverty.

Industry – Brick Production • Current situation in Bangladesh: • Production of 12 billion bricks annually • Largest source of greenhouse gas emissions About the project • Reductions on coal: 500, 000 tons • Reduction on carbon dioxide: 1.3 million tons • New energy efficient techniques will be introduced
