What is coral • A living structure made of groups of organisms called polyps • symbiotic relationship with a Zooxanthellae that lives in their tissue • Polyps build skeletons limestone • Photosyntesis is done by Zooxanthellae • photosynthesis produces oxygen for the coral to breed and creates the proper conditions for the skeleton to form

  3. Coral In Barbados • surrounded by a narrow 200 m deep shelf, 2-3 km • 3 types of coral reef around Barbados: Bank Reefs, Fringing Reefs and Patch Reefs. • The area covered by bank reefs is over 38.3 km , while the fringing reefs cover 20.4 km.

What's being done • Folkestone Marine Park and reserve was made to protect the coral • The park and reserve are located on the west coast of Barbados. • The reserve is 2.2 kilometres and is 950 metres at its widest point and 660 metres at the narrowest • The reserve consists of four zones: • scientific zone • northern and southern zones • recreational zone
