Overview • This slide show is intended for a Junior high (7th to 8th grade) and early high school students. • This slide show will allow them to see first hand what battles were a major part of the Revolutionary War. • Students will be given a quiz at the conclusion of this presentation, so that they may see if they understand the material. • Students will be working on this in a computer lab, while under the supervision of their teacher. Lexington & Concord • Concord was a Colonial arms depot, which the British were trying to find and destroy. • When they arrived the depot had already been evacuated by the Colonial soldiers • After holding off the British, the Colonial forces finally retreated, but were able to slow the movement of the British army. Bunker Hill • The Colonial forces caused massive losses for the British army. • The Colonials were forced to retreat because they were running short on ammunition. • The famous phrase was said by William Prescott, during this battle. • “Don’t Shoot till you see the whites of their eyes!” Home Previous Next Quiz

Kings Mountain • This battle took place on October 7, 1780, in North Carolina • The battle was one of the quickest in the entire Revolutionary War, only lasting about 65 minutes. • Colonial leader Nathanael Green helped the Colonials destroy nearly an entire section of the British Standing army during the battle.   15. Kings Mountain • The Colonial victory marked one of the few battles where the Colonials defeated the British • General Cornwallis, commander of the British forces, was forced to retreat back to South Carolina. Home Previous Next Quiz

Yorktown • This battle took place in Yorktown, Virginia and the siege last nearly a month from September 28 until October 19 1781. • The battle of Yorktown was the last stand for the British army. • The Colonials surrounded the British forces, basically holding them at a stand still. Yorktown • The British were attempting to flee back to England to return with reinforcements. • When trying to retreat, they realized that they were unable to set sail, because the French had arrived and blocked them off from the ocean. • General Cornwallis was finally forced to surrender Home Previous Next Quiz

Yorktown • On October 19 1781, General Cornwallis, sent Charles O’hara to surrender his sword. • Cornwallis refused to surrender to the Colonial Army in person. • The victory at Yorktown led to the end of the Revolutionary War. • The war was officially over after the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
