  7. V. Honor your father and your Mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

  8. Modern Version: Obey your parents ’ commands with a good and submissive attitude.

  9. V. Honor your father and your Mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. This is the first commandment with a consequence or a promise : you will live long in the land.

  10. DEUTERONOMY 5:16 • "Honor your Father and mother as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long in the land which the Lord your God is giving you."

  11. What else did the Law say? • 17 “Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. (Ex. 21:17) • 9 “‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death. Because they have cursed their father or mother, their blood will be on their own head. (Lev. 20:9) • These Laws prescribed the death penalty for cursing (repudiating the authority) of parents.

  12. What did Jesus say about it? • 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death • Mat. 15:4

  13. What did Paul say about it? • 1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. • 2 “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— • 3 “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

  14. Colossians 3:20 • 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.

  15. WISE ADVICES FROM THE WISEST KING • Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. (Prov. 1:8) • My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. • (Prov. 6: 20) • Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. Prov. 23:22)

  16. WARNINGS FROM THE WISEST KING • If someone curses their father or mother, their lamp will be snuffed out in pitch darkness. (Prov. 20:20) • The eye that mocks a father, that scorns an aged mother, will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley, will be eaten by the vultures. (Prov. 30:17)

  17. The Nature of wicked people: • 28 Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy. (Romans 1:28-31)

  18. A Sign of the Times • 1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. (2 Tim. 3:1-5)

  19. HONOR YOUR PARENTS • WHY? • Because God commands • It is right before God • Pleases the Lord • THE CONSEQUENCES: • Everything will go well with you • You will live a long life on the earth Exchange OBEDIENCE AND HONOR for WELL BEING AND LONGEVITY

  20. What does it mean to honor your parents? • “‘Each of you must respect your mother and father, and you must observe my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. (Lev. 19:3 ) • “Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” (Eph. 6:1) • “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” (Prov. 1:8) • “My son, keep your father’s command and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.” (Prov. 6:20) • “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” ( Prov. 23:22)

  21. Jewish Understanding of it. • Keeping this commandment was associated by the Israelites with individual benefit and with the ability of the nation of Israel to remain in the land to which God was leading them. • Honor your father and your Mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

  22. Jewish Understanding of it. • Dishonoring parents in specific ways was associated with severe punishment. According to the Torah, striking or cursing one’s father or mother was punishable by immediate death. • In Deuteronomy, a procedure is described for parents to bring a persistently disobedient son to the city elders for death by stoning.

  23. Are there Limits? • What limit do you find on the obligation of children to obey their parents? • Paul says: “obey your parents "in the Lord." • Thus, it seems to add the limitation that parents must be following in the ways of God. • Parents, what responsibility does this place on you in giving commands and instructions to your children?

  24. PRACTICAL WAYS TO HONOR YOUR PARENTS • Show RESPECT in the way you talk and relate to them • Show LOVE and AFFECTION to them • Give time to LISTEN to them and their advices • ASK for their advices and prayers for you before decisions • FOLLLOW their advices and instructions • OBEY them • PLEASE them and PRAY for them • ENJOY their company • HONOR them before other people too • TAKE CARE of them when it is in your power • SPEAK good words to them and about them
