  1. TIA’s Activities in the Areas of ICT and the Environment Cheryl Blum, VP, Technology & Standards TIA

  2. TIA’s Sustainability Initiative • Work with member companies in their identification of, development of, promotion of, and positioning of green and sustainable initiatives. • STEP has been identified as a mechanism to promote and position the initiatives and technologies of member companies.

  3. Why STEP? • Fills the ICT void not addressed by other “green building” rating systems • ICT systems have been challenged to contribute to the sustainable building movement • ICT systems are not (yet) part of the changing building codes and standards process • Engage all stakeholders to accomplish sustainability goals

  4. Accomplishments • ANSI/TIA standard development in motion • TR-42.10, STEP Subcommittee • STEP Rating System\Guide demonstration documents • www.thestepfoundation.org • Core rating system has been validated • Pilot projects have validated best practices

  5. Current Projects • Users’ manual & online education program • Considering additional ICT categories & credits • Ongoing Pilot Projects • STEP for Manufacturers rating system • Capture existing sustainability practices • Encourage additional initiatives

  6. Other TIA Related Activities • TIA Standards • TIA-942-A • Supports energy efficiency for Data Centers • TIA-4964 • RAN energy savings management • TSB-473 • Green Revised Energy Efficient Network (GREEN) – Technology Initiatives Study for cdma2000 Wireless Networks • TIA-222 (in progress) • Supports small wind turbines

  7. Proposed Resolution • The GSC continues to provide general support in the efforts related to the development of an ICT standard for sustainability

  8. Supplementary Slides

  9. Buildings are Evolving • HPB – High Performance Buildings • Efficiency & performance • HPSB – High Performance Sustainable Buildings • Efficiency, performance & collaborative sustainability • ICT systems are the new frontier of sustainable smart building technology

  10. Buildings are Evolving • Convergence – integration, digitalization, network neutrality • VOIP • POE LED lighting • Fire extinguishers with IP addresses • EOIP – Everything On IP

  11. What is an ICT System? • Access Control • Acoustics - Physically Adjustable Asset Tracking • Audiovisual Systems (AV) • Background Music System (BGM) BMS/BAS • Broadcast • Cellular Reinforcement • Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) • Data Networks • Digital Signage Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) • Electronic Concierge Services • Electronic Medical Record Systems • Environmental Sensors and Alarms • Fire/Life Safety Systems • Guest Services • Hearing Impaired/Interpreter Systems • HVAC System Control • Integrated Control Interface • Integrated Operating Room Systems Intercom Systems • Intrusion Detection System – Physical • Kiosks • Lighting Control • Mass Notification MATV/CATV/DSS Systems • Motorized Shades • Multimedia Systems • Nurse Call System • Paging Systems • Parking Management System • Patient Entertainment/Education Systems • Point-of-Sale Systems (POS) • Property Management Systems (PMS) • Radio Communication Systems • Real-time Transcription Systems • Robotic Delivery Systems • Room Scheduling Systems • SmartBoard Systems • Sound Masking Systems • Structured Cabling System • Sub-metering Systems • Valet Services • Visitor Management System • Way Finding

  12. STEP is… Framework for collaboration, innovation and partnerships among ICT associations A five-phase, best practices approach to planning, implementing, operating and measuring the impact of a project

  13. STEP is… A flexible system that accommodates multiple technologies Adaptable to any technology in new or retrofit applications Introduces a Smart Building Technology path to Sustainability ROI

  14. What is STEP? • (Smart and) Sustainability Rating System for ICT Systems is… • Best and smart practices • Scorecard • Guideline • Standard

  15. STEP Foundation Mission: Promote sustainable information communication technology (ICT) system practices Vision: STEP-rated projects will establish the ICT industry benchmark for sustainability Stand-alone 501(c)3 organization
