  1. What’s New at the Haddonfield Library? A Presentation on “What’s New at theHaddonfield Public Library” presented and developed by Susan Briant, Director of Haddonfield Public Library, on February 28, 2009

  2. Mission of the Public Library : to serve the public • The purpose of the HPL is to serve the people of Haddonfield by providing ready access to information and ideas. Building on a tradition begun in 1803, the Library is a center for lifelong learning, welcoming people of all ages, backgrounds and interests. The library’s collections and services are dynamic and designed to meet the informational, educational and cultural needs of the community.

  3. What’s at the HPL? • Extensive print collections + 85,000 • Databases available from home • Children’s Programs – Reading Activities • DVDs – CDs -Videos • Downloadable Audiobooks / Playaways

  4. What’s at the HPL? • Newsletters announcing new books via email • Virtual reference 24/7 • Adult & Teen Programs • Computer classes & demonstrations

Serving Special Needs • Equipment for those with disabilities (Reading magnification machines) • Large Print books for those with vision difficulties • Large collections of Audio books for commuters, others with listening preference • Access to NJ Library for the Blind and Handicapped for additional materials

  6. Serving those with Special Needs • Home delivery service via Interfaith Care Givers • Librarian helps you to choose a profile • Librarian assists with book selection • IFC volunteer picks up and returns books, CDs or DVDs

Your library card • A gateway to information online, even from home • Search the library catalog online to find the books that you want to read in a timely fashion – place requests electronically from the library’s homepage • Place requests electronically for items the library does not own • Specialized collections – autism, parenting

  21. What’s new in the past year? • Electronic newsletter – every month- subscribe by email • Author programs – Glenn Hurricane Schwartz, Monica Yant Kinney • Cultural events – author program on 150th anniversary of Haddy – January 2009 • Coffee and tea at the library

  22. Teen Movie Nights / Teen Corner • New area in library for teens age 15 and above • Monthly movie nights for teens at the library or high school • Teen Advisory Board (TAB) – teens advising the library • Creating a constructive space for teens to learn and relax

What’s ahead for your library? • Much needed space for people to use books, dvds, and for recreational reading • A facility that can serve the handicapped • A Library that offers adult, teen and children’s programs, a community gathering place • A place to properly house historical collections • A technology center providing special collections online and from remote access

What has happened recently? • Consultants’ report unveiled with Building Program for facility with purpose and function (at www.haddonfieldlibrary.org) • HF Foundation serving as fiduciary agent for library • Professional fundraiser has been hired to gauge if significant private funds can be raised • Possible capital campaign to raise funds

  25. What has happened recently? What’s coming? • Selection of an Architect to do Preliminary Design Preliminary work • Sprucing up the building – paint and roof repairs • Shared services with BOE and Borough of Haddonfield to save $$$$ • Library web site will get a face lift • Library referendum in future to vote on the cost of new or larger library

  26. How can you help? Support your local library • Join the Friends of the Library group, which provides the library with supplemental support beyond tax $$$ • Write a letter supporting your library to the local newspaper • Tell your elected officials of the value of the library and thank them for their support • The public library supports the entire community- all ages and stages of life
