  2. Simile ~using like or as to compare 2 things Ex. The basket is as red as a fire truck. Ex. The house is as old as a dinosaur.

  3. Metaphor ~comparing 2 things without using like or as; something is something else Ex. The dog is bigger that Texas. Ex. The little girl was a sweet pie.

  4. Hyperbole ~using exaggeration to make a point Ex. The dog growled so loud I thought it was a dinosaur. Ex. My baby cousin is the size of a mouse.

  5. Onomatopoeia ~Sound word Ex. The cat hissed very loudly. Ex. The boy has a small case of hic-ups.

  6. Alliteration ~repetition of beginning sound Ex. The cowboy coughed all the way to California. Ex. The Smurf ate smores at the small campground.

  7. Personification ~giving human qualities to something not human Ex. The grass stood tall in the air. Ex. The rocks were swimming in the pond.

  8. Idiom ~a well known expression that does not mean what it says. Ex. I just killed two birds with one stone. Ex. He just got a taste of his own medicine.

  9. Practice Problems I have a headache the size of the world. I ate cotton candy and candy at the carnival. She is as skinny as a stick. The leaves raced to the ground. That was such a piece of cake. The machine made a loud boom as it turned on. You are a goat for eating so much.
