  7. Relevance? • You! • Representation • All students; accountable to YOU!! • Voice, influence and impact • Local MSC reps and ISC chairs • Conference (April)

  8. Relevance? • Medsin • Permanently co-opted to MSC • Education sub-committee • Global Health • International Committee • Activities board • Build on strengths • Share good practice

  9. What is Conference? • Forum to decide MSC policy for the next session • All motions passed at conference become MSC policy • MSC is mandated to work on this over the coming year • Really useful way of bringing important issues to a wider arena

  10. Motions • Pharmaceutical marketing, the arms trade, climate change etc are all motions that Medsin members generated that are now MSC policy • Even better, motions passed at conference can be taken to the Annual Representatives Meeting – if passed here, it has the support of the entire BMA

  11. Getting to Conference • Find out who your MSC rep/ISC chair • Go along to the meetings this year and try and contribute • When they are writing motions, submit Medsin issues • The deadline for submitting motions is Wednesday 16th January at 12pm

  12. Debating Motions • Approx 250 motions submitted every year so not all are debated • Each medical school gets up to three priority motions, one will definitely be debated • Try and convince your MSC rep to make a Medsin motion one of their priorities

  13. How to write a motion • This conference….. • Always start a motion like this. It can be followed up with any number of things such as believes, calls on, acknowledges etc • Break it up • One long motion is harder to read, more confusing and has less chance of being passed • Break the motion up into parts and it has more chance of passing

  14. How to write a motion 2 • Have an action • Keep it short • Shorter motions are easier to read • Proof read it please

  15. Contact • Local rep www.bma.org.uk/students • 07785377635 • inoble@bma.org.uk • Gerard.millen@gmail.com
