  1. NOISE POLLUTION

  2. WhatisNoisePollution? Noise pollution is the disturbing or excessive noise that may harm the balance and activity of human or animal life. The most common sources of outdoor noise, also called environmental noise, worldwide are caused by machines and transportation systems, such as road traffic, planes, jet skis, garbage trucks, construction equipment, manufacturing processes and boom boxes, to name a few, are among the audible litter that are routinely broadcast into the air.
  3. HowisNoiseMeasured? Anytypeof noise, harmfulornot, can be felt in slightchanges in preassure, measured in decibels(abbreviated dB) which measure the intensity of a sound, in a scale of 0-150. Any sound above 85 dB can cause hearing loss; you know that you are listening to an 85-dB sound if you have to raise your voice to be heard by somebody else.
  4. Examples of SoundPreassureLevels 0 dB: Hearing threshold 20 dB: Leaves fluttering 30 dB: Whisper in the ear 60 dB: Normal speech conversation for a participant 60-100 dB: Motor vehicles for a close observer 120 dB: Airplane taking off for a close observer 120-140 dB: Pain threshold

  6. WhichDecibels can Cause Damage? Permanenthearingloss can be causedbya one-time exposure to an intense “impulse” sound, such as an explosion, or by continuous exposure to loud noises over an extended period of time. Long or repeated exposure to sounds at or above 85 decibels can cause hearing loss. Sounds of less than 75 decibels, even after long exposure, are unlikely to cause hearing loss.
  7. Effects of NoisePollution Mostproblemscausedbynoisepollution are stress relatedillnesses, speechinterference, hearingloss, sleepdisruption and lostproductivity. Still, there are twomajoreffectswemustalso look at: Hearing The effect of noise pollution to a personis damage to the eardrum, which may
result in a permanent hearing. General HealthThe physiological manifestations are anxiety and stress reaction, alongside with headaches, irritability and nervousness, feeling of fatigue and decreases work efficiency. It can also cause hair cell damage, fiber loss, communication, interference, cardiovascular disturbances and hysteria.

  9. Prevention TIPS Construction of soundproof rooms for noisy machines in industrial and manufacturing installations must be encouraged. Use of horns with jarring sounds, motorbikes with damaged exhaust pipes, noisy trucks to be banned. Noise producing industries, airports, bus and transport terminals and railway stations to sighted far from where living places.
  10. PREVENTION TIPS Community law enforcers should check the misuse of loudspeakers, worshipers, outdoor parties and discos, as well as public announcements systems. Community laws must silence zones near schools / colleges, hospitals etc. Vegetation (trees) along roads and in residential areas is a good way to reduce noise pollution as they absorb sound.
  11. NOISE POLLUTION IN CARTAGENA Noisepollutionaffectstheenvironment in Cartagena becausethecaribbean culture ischaracterizedforit´stendencyto use bigstereoswithlargevolumequality, alsocalled “pikos”, whichtendtodistrurbthepeace of thepeople in ourcitybyconstantlyplayingdifferentmusicgenressuch as vallenato, salsa, champeta, merengue, etc in public places. Thisconstant exposure causes health problems to surrounding residents which are made mainly to older adults or people with disabilities ; It can also become a a nuisance fr those who are not involved in this kind of activity, because they can not sleep and usually in this kind of celebrations are fights that cause damage to homes in the vicinity.
  12. Anotherissueconcerningnoisepollution in Cartagena isthefact that our local airport (Aeropuerto Rafael Nuñez) islocatedwithinthecityparameterswithoutprovidinganykind of noisebarrier, such as wallsorsoundprooffences. Thisdirectlyaffectstheresidents of Crespo, Marbella and othervicinitiesnearbybecauseitworks 24/7 so nearbyneighbors are exposedtoconstantnoisebetween 120-140 dB duringmost of day and nightwhich can lead to complete hearingloss and concentrationdifficulty at a youngage. And whilesomemightthink that implementingnoisebarriersafter so long of theairportbeingthereisnot a priority,we as citizenshavetoencouragethemayoraltytofulfillthisrequirement so ourfellowneighbors of Crespo and Marbella can havebetterlifequality. Theprove that thisis posible is that the construction of a wall with certain technical specifications and specific materials as an alternative vented by the Regional Port Society of Cartagena (SPRC), to mitigate noise problems generated by its operations permanently and directly affecting residents of sector Las Colonias in Manga.
  13. Possiblesolutions in cartagena Have large size banners or boards with no horn or limited horn symbols Educate students, employees, drivers of all vehicles about the noise pollution in masses. Start off huge rallies against noise pollution Have sound detectors near offices, hospitals, educational institutions and residential areas. Punish those who violate this rule by imposing fine. Keep factories far from cities areas. Don't blast music on the radio or computer or speakers. Be considerate of your own ears and those of other around you. Train your dog not to bark so much.
  14. Noise SOUND Sound is a kind of vibration which travel through air, water, and are sensed by the ear. This is from music, speech, and others like films dialogs etc. One thing in this matter is that we can increase the volume of sound or decrease as per our taste if it is from radio, television, computers and man operative machines. Whereas a noise is a sound from one and more at a time which can not be heard clearly and only mixed sounds will be heard. As a fact you can not increase or decrease the noise.
