  3. Anton Chekhov Russian 1860-1904 Writer and studied/practiced medicine. Published great literary works and scientific pieces. Famous plays: The Cherry Orchard (1904), The Sisters (1901), and The Seagull (1896) Died of tuberculosis in 1904

  4. Anton Chekhov First wrote for financial gain When he died, he did not have a literary reputation beyond Russia. However, since WWI (English translation), he’s been regarded as one of the finest short story writers in the world Subject matter and technique influenced many other short story writers, including Hemmingway

  5. Anton Chekhov It is often said that little action occurs in Chekhov's stories and plays, but he compensates by developing internal drama. Focus on what happens within a given character, emphasizing moments of epiphanies and realization His stories and plays operate like Tolstoy’s and other short story writers where they illuminate a problem in society or the human condition, BUT it’s up to the reader to make meaning from his stories.

  6. Background Nineteenth century Russia Members of the aristocracy lived on wealth that had been accumulated generations earlier (“old money”) Honor = displays of good behavior. Required preserving the reputation and heritage of long-standing family name Without good fortune and money, your name could save you – promise of stability to come

  7. “A Problem” Three uncles struggle with what to do about their nephew, Sasha Instead of welcoming their decision to be lenient on him and change, he falls back on his irresponsible habits Sees that he can manipulate his relatives and avoid facing the consequences he deserves

  8. “A Problem” Raises important questions about forgiveness and responsibility Will focus on dynamic and static characters—who will change or stay the same in the story What meaning we derive from the story through evaluating the characters’ decisions
