The PHENIX collaboration meeting held on May 14, 1998, focused on recent developments in high-energy physics, particularly related to heavy-ion collisions and the pursuit of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Key presentations included a summary of insights from INT workshops, discussions on hadron and lepton behavior, and the nature of phase transitions. The meeting emphasized the importance of global variables and various models, including hydrodynamical and partonic models. Future initiatives involve educational outreach and tutorials aimed at engaging the broader scientific community.

THINC Update Phenix EC Meeting 5/14/98 R. Seto
Ames THINC Session • INT update - many folks attended INT workshops- I see this as a VERY good thing • 30 minuite summary of what we have learned in 3 10 minuite talks (dicated by who went)- perhaps • hadrons - HBT, spectra etc • leptons/photons, chiral restoration - high B, high T, pseudoscalars, J/,… • other - nature of phase transition, hard probles, DCC’s, oddballs… +” what it will take to say we have seen the QGP” • Main part -focus on Day-1 - global variables • it was thought was that event generators was a way to get a handle on global variables • Speakers • Y. Pang - overview + cascade models (conf) • B. Schlei - Hydrodynamical models (conf) • 1-more? Kinder-Geiger, Miklos, XN Wang? • Partonic models • I have NOT asked some PHENIX person to cover global measurements since I want to be careful about overlap with the working groups.(also time) -should I? • I will (have) asked folks to also cover the more general question of dN/dy, Et etc
Web Pages • Just getting started - Please be patient. Everyone is busy... • Have asked folks to add tutorials on various subjects as well as papers etc • (Sean had already started this to some extent) • We will have a welcome section (eventually) with info for non-physicists • I have asked the INT attendees to write up summaries and will assemble these into an INT overview - • One interesting topic covered periodically at INT is the “what we need to say we have seen the Plasma” - I would like to have this as an ongoing updated section
Other • PHENIX “U” - idea is still around - do we want to do it? How many students will be around? • should NOT duplicate RHIC school- it should be on a much more pedantic level for students • perhaps bi-weekly lectures w/ notes • starting with basics like - “what is rapidity, or what is an invariant cross section” (I might not attend) • …. Lots of stuff in between p-A physics etc.. • to things like basics of the chiral symmetry restoration • lattice QCD (I might attend!) • QCD phase transitions and the early universe/in stars • I would tap famous professors and scientists for this • Bill Z, Glenn Y, Sam A, Mike T, Mike M.,Barbara J, … Mike Bennet, Jamie N., Marzia R. • may be worth extending this to • how does the phenix timing system work?, or tell me about root…., or about drift chambers… • Relationship with theorists?? • Initiative to seed universities • want a sense in theoretical community that they are welcome
