  2. Bell Work:(4-5 sentences)! What makes a hero? What are four qualities a hero must possess?

  3. What is an Epic?! • A long story in poem form • An epic has a hero. • The epic is the story of the • hero’s travels and his fights • with monsters.

Epic Continued • Epics were originally sung, often to a • harp. • Epics contain information about the • culture that created them: religion, • dress, homes, weapons and war, roles • of men and women, values and moral • standards. • Epics contain clues to what the • people who created them feared or • did not understand: natural disasters, • death, heavens, storms etc.

  5. The Four Factors – that distinguish epics from other forms of narrative poetry • 1. Scale: epic poems tend to be too long to be read or performed in a single sitting. • 2. Stylistic: epic poems are written in a styled verse (They have a serious and formal tone) • 3. Historicity: epic poems always deal with persons and events that are considered (believed) to be historically real by the poet and the audience. (The tale of the tribes). • 4. Epic Hero Cycle: the hero tends to follow a predictable cycle of events that is repeated in epics from every sort of culture. Cycles vary from epic to epic.

  6. What do they all have in common?

  7. Traits of an Epic Hero Has “larger than life” qualities, possibly supernatural powers. He is considered better in most respects than the common man.

  8. Traits of an Epic Hero • Is a Natural Leader of Men • I usually mole, strong and able • Is a trained soldier and believes in or follows the code of honor for which he is willing to sacrifice his life.

  9. Traits of an Epic Hero • Is appealing to the opposite sex but rarely has an extended relationship.

  10. Traits of an Epic Hero Defeats monsters (bad guys) and/or fights gods

  11. Traits of an Epic Hero • Has good on his/her side • (Ares the God of War rode along side the Trojans aiding them in war.)

  12. Traits of an Epic Hero Often stands alone in battle. Beowulf fights big battles alone.

  13. Traits of an Epic Hero • Is smarter than everyone else, generally a problem solver. • Odysseus tricks the Trojan’s by hiding inside a “gift horse” and surprising them.

  14. Traits of an Epic Hero • Has a weakness that often • destroys him or her or leads to • death. • Achilles was shot and killed in his vulnerable heel that was not dipped in the river Styx.

  15. Traits of an Epic Hero Makes long journeys, always on the move, travels to find adventure. Indiana Jones travels the globe in search of artifacts and adventure.

  16. Traits of an Epic Hero • A Skilled Fighter

  17. He has a desire to be loved and respected by his own people; the desire for some degree of wealth or material comfort.

  18. The desire not to bring shame to himself or his family in any way .The hero also hopes that the divine will favor him and his cause.

  19. Epic Heroes: are often of mixed divine and human birth and so possesses human weaknesses.The divine world (the gods and goddesses) often interfere with the human world

  20. Your Task: • Your group will be assigned a super hero and a real life heroes to investigate on line. Please answer the questions and be prepared to discuss what you have learned in class.

The Super-Hero • Possible Definition: • Hero Name/Life Summary • Where does hero come from? • What is the hero’s “special” quality/powers? • What does the hero look like? • What does the super hero look like? • What does this super hero do that makes him or her a hero? • List ten qualities and characteristics. (ex. Selfless) • Revised definition.

  24. Real Life Heroes • Mother Teresa, CheGuavara, Anne Frank, Pele, Bruce Lee, Rosa Parks, Ghandi, Martin Luther King, Charles Lindbergh, Nelson Mandela, Bill Watson, Helen Keller, American G.I., Emmeline Pankhurst, Jackie Robinson.
