  2. Grade What-If • Excel spreadsheet to estimate your course grade • Download from course website • Save to local storage to preserve and update • Can get grades from Online Grade Reports • Danger in leaving grades blank if not done Computers and Society, Class 11

  3. Staying for Lab • Two or more labs or assignments behind, must stay during Lab to get 100% attendance credit tonight - 3 labs in, and 2 assignments in. Who must stay: • EVERYONE! (Unless you have turned more in tonight). Computers and Society, Class 11

Social Issues - Essay • From “Social Issues” handout on website • Topics for short homework essays and semester essay, and on Quiz 2 and final • Review of semester Essay (handout in first class) • 3 – 5 pages • One one of the social issues from web page • Must use course materials and discussion • Not a research assignment Computers and Society, Class 11

  5. Second makeup for Midterm? • There has been a request for a second makeup for the Midterm Exam • Proposed date-time-place: April 9, 4 – 6 PM in 213 State Hall (normal room) • LAST makeup for Midterm • If you want to retake it for a better grade, let me know. Computers and Society, Class 11

Social Issues • Children and Pornography • Most people feel children (especially very young) should be protected from pornography • Widely available on Internet, can come upon it by accident, or have it pushed on child • Many legal attempts, all struck down • May not restrict rights of adults to protect children • Adults have a right to access to almost all writing and imagery • Exception: pornographic pictures of children Computers and Society, Class 11

Social Issues • Children and Pornography • Also, some people say to just pass a law outlawing pornography, or outlawing distributing pornography to children • Would that stop children’s exposure to pornography? That is, would it be a solution? • Software filters, but they “leak” • Put computer in family area • Monitoring software, or suggestion Computers and Society, Class 11

Linking Vs Embedding • For Lab 11 (tonight’s lab) • Putting an “object” from one application into another • Object: picture, document, text, chart, movie, sound, etc. • Application: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, etc. • Document – A user file produced by an application • One method is linking, the other is embedding Computers and Society, Class 11

Linking Vs Embedding • Linking – when source is updated, destination is automatically updated the next time it is opened • Link gets broken if source or destination is moved (disadvantage) • Embedding – there is no persistent connection between the source and destination • If the source or destination is updated, that does not affect the other • In effect, two different objects Computers and Society, Class 11
