The Effect of Subcultures We generally view culture as a single, shared phenomenon In doing so, we often miss critical differences between subcultures within an organization Subcultures can form along: • Union and non-union lines • Hierarchical lines (i.e., managers vs. non-managers) • Department/Function

  3. Unions or Hierarchical Level? Previous studies have suggested that subcultures can form along either line We examined both hierarchical level and subcultures to see where the greatest amount of differentiation was Our findings: • Greater differences were found between union and non-union employees on the Denison culture traits • Hierarchical level matters less

  4. Practical Implications • It may be beneficial for us to collect demographic items relating to union membership • Would allow us to provide reports along these lines • Provides a more nuanced view of the culture to clients • Can also look along other possible subcultural lines (i.e., managers vs. non-managers) to provide further value • i.e., Sun Capitol
