  1. Transformative Change Under The Swachh Bharat Mission The people of India have rallied behind the Prime Minister's clarion appeal in recent years, and they have collectively reformed behaviours that they had maintained for millennia. In India, there has been a sanitation revolution — a movement led by, for, and by the people. This vast grassroots movement is possibly the world's largest behaviour change movement. The Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) has established itself as a model for inclusive development. It has demonstrated that transformative change is possible when every individual participates in and contributes to the revolution.SBM went far beyond the mission of just one Ministry, from hiring lakhs of swachhagrahis to disseminate the sanitation message, to assisting thousands of rani mistris in breaking gender norms and constructing toilets, to having the Swachh Bharat emblem on every new currency note in the country. SBM rural and SBM urban have been encouraging rural and urban residents in India to use household toilets instead of open defecation for the past few years. These modest proddings have yielded huge results. SBM has had a favourable impact on rural populations' lives, health, money, and dignity. SBM's impact on the market economy and employment creation, which is considerable in and of itself, amplifies these benefits. The huge improvement in India's sanitation coverage has resulted indirect job opportunities for masons, labourers, and industries that produce sanitaryware, as well as indirect job prospects for several related industries. One mason and two labourers are required to work for three days on average to construct one toilet, resulting in a total of nine person-days of work. An estimated 90 crore person-days of employment have been generated because of the construction of 10 crore toilets (progress as of October 2019) under SBM-Grameen (SBM rural). These amount to far over 45 lakh person-years of work, if one person-year of work consists of 200 working days! SBM has made a substantial contribution to the country's production. UNICEF previously claimed that approximately 38% of India's children under the age of five were physically and cognitively stunted, owing to a lack of cleanliness. The incapacity of such a substantial section of our future workforce to reach maximum productivity poses a severe threat to our most asset - the demographic dividend. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation health impact research found that in Open Defecation Free (ODF) zones, there were 32% fewer occurrences of diarrhoea among children, 15% fewer cases of stunting and 32% fewer cases of women with BMIs below normal. Higher school attendance and improved learning results are directly linked to better nutrition and health for women and children. On August 15, 2014, we saw a key milestone in India's modern history – a tipping point that ushered in a sanitation revolution, and on August 15, 2019, we saw a water revolution. The SBM is a breath of fresh air for those working to accomplish Sustainable Development Goals around the world. It's a fascinating tale of political leadership unlike any other, one that
