Pedro Alvares Cabral- Claimed Brazil for Portugal (1500) • Amerigo Vespucci-discovered Columbus’ voyage wasn’t part of Asia, but a New World • Ferdinand Megellan-Portuguese explorer who was the first to sail around the world (1519) • Vasco de Balboa- Spaniard, 1st European to see Pacific Ocean Other Explores Take the Sea

  6. Hernando Cortes (1519)- landed in Mexico • He and the Conquistadors who followed were lured by the promise of treasure • Spanish were the 1st Europeans to settle in Americas Spanish Conquest in Mexico

  7. Cortes and his men, Conquistadors, reached the Aztec • Montezuma, Aztec, emperor, thought Cortes was a god. • Montezuma gave half the empire’s wealth… Cortes wanted it all Cortes Conquers the Aztecs

  8. 1520- Aztecs rebelled against the Spanish • Cortes defeated Aztecs • 1. Better weapons 2. European Diseases killed many Natives • Smallpox's, mumps 3. Spanish convinced enemies of Aztecs to fight against them

  10. Pizarro Subdues the Inca • Pizarro, Conquistador, defeated Incan Empire • Spanish kidnapped Atahualpa, seized the ransom for him, and killed him Spanish Conquest of Peru

  11. Spain began to enforce their culture on the Natives • Spanish forced the Natives to work within an Encomiendo system where they were forced into labor. Spain’s pattern of Conquest

  15. Bartolome de Las Casas spoke out against the use of Natives as slaves and pushed for the enslavement of Africans (he later denounced this) • Native American resistance became more prominent as Spanish influence grew. African Slavery and Native Resistance
