  2. Dictatorship A dictatorship is a form of government in which the government is ruled by an individual, the dictator, usually without hereditary ascension.

  3. Domestication Domestication is the taming of a population of animals or plants that become accustomed to an environment such as a farm.

  4. Economy • Is the system of how money is made and used within a particular country or region. A region's economy is connected with things like how many goods and services are produced and how much money people can spend on these things.

  5. Economic Systems • Traditional: people grow and make all the things they need to live. • Market: people own their own business and set the cost of the goods sold. • Command: the government owns and controls businesses and sets cost of goods sold. • Mixed: a combination of traditional, market, and command economies. USA for example.

  6. Traditional Economy • Is an underdeveloped economy in which communities use primitive tools and methods to harvest and hunt for food, often resulting in little economic growth.

  7. Command Economy • An economy where supply and price are regulated by the government rather than market forces.

  8. Market Economy • A system of allocating resources based only on the interaction of market forces, such as supply and demand. A true market economy is free of governmental influence, collusion and other external interference.

  9. Mixed Economy • A mixed economy is an economic system that includes a variety of public and government control, or a mixture of capitalism and socialism. The United States of America and Canada have mixed economies.

  10. Egypt Ancient Egypt was an ancient civilization in eastern North Africa, along the Nile River in what is now the modern nation of Egypt. The civilization began around 3150 B.C.

  11. Empire • An empire is an extensive group of states or ethnic peoples united and ruled over by a single monarch or ruling authority.

  13. Federalism A form of government in which power is divided between the federal/national government and the states

  14. Feudal System/ Feudalism Medieval European political and social system made up of a set of reciprocal legal and military obligations among the king, nobles, knights and the serfs.

  15. Geography is the science that studies the lands, the features, the inhabitants, and the phenomena of the Earth.

  16. Government Ruling authority for a community/country Types include: Republic Dictatorship Monarchy Totalitarianism Communism Democracy

  17. Guilds • A guild is an association of craftsmen in a particular trade. They were the forerunners of today’s unions.

  18. Hemispheres Eastern And Western Divided by the Prime Meridian Northern And Southern Divided by the Equator

  19. Hieroglyphics • In Greek - ἱερογλυφικός meaning “scared writing.” • A system of written language where pictures are used as symbols representing sounds, ideas, or objects. It is the formal Egyptian writing found on temples, pyramids, and important building in Ancient Egypt.

  20. Hunter-Gatherer A hunter-gatherer society is one whose primary method for survival involves the gathering of edible plants and the hunting of animals from the wild.

  21. Import / Export • an import is any good (e.g. a commodity) or service brought into one country from another country for sale. • An export is a good (e.g. a commodity) or service that is sent from one country to another country for sale. An import in the receiving country is an export to the sending country.

  22. Immigration / Immigrant • Immigration refers to the movement of people (Immigrant) who move to a new country to permanently settle there.

  23. Interdependent • When two or more groups need each other in order for something to work.

  24. Irrigation A way to bring water into an area to supply the needs of humans and/or crops.

  27. Israel A country in Western Asia located on the eastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. The modern state of Israel has its roots in the Land of Israel, a concept central to Judaism since ancient times.

  29. Latitude and Longitude Lines on a map or globe that help find locations of specific places.

  30. Latitude • Imaginary lines on a map or globe that run East/West and measure North/South of the Equator.

  31. Longitude • Imaginary lines on a map or globe that run North/South and East/West of the Prime Meridian.

  32. Ferdinand Magellan • a Portuguese maritime explorer who, tried to find a westward route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. This expedition was the first to cross the Pacific Ocean and successfully circumnavigate the Earth in history.

  33. Magna Carta The first document that limited the king’s power in England. This lead to the establishment of the English Parliament.

  34. Mercantilism • the economic idea that a country gains power by building up its supply of gold and silver through a favorable balance of trade, the development of agriculture and manufactures, and the establishment of foreign trading monopolies.

  35. Mesopotamia From the Greek meaning "land between the rivers“) is the area of the Tigris and Euphrates river system, largely corresponding to modern Iraq where civilization began.

  37. Monarchy • A monarchy is a form of government in which supreme power is absolutely or nominally lodged in an individual called a king or queen.

  38. Monastery • A Medieval monastery was a farm, an inn, a hospital, a school and a library. It was a center for religion and education where monks lived and worked.

  39. Migration The movement of people from one land to another for different reasons such as, employment, war, famine, persecution, (religious or political,) and/or education.

  41. Natural Resources • Resources found in nature that we use to make energy and finished goods to use in our lives.

  42. Nebuchadnezzar • The king of Babylon in Mesopotamia who built the Hanging Gardens for his wife.
