Revisions to Traffic Control Devices Guidelines and Definitions Update

  2. Section 1A.08 – Certain signs and other devices are not considered to be traffic control devices

  3. Section 1A.12 – New purple color for lanes restricted to only vehicles with registered “electronic toll collection accounts”

  4. Section 1A.13 – Definitions • All definitions now appear in Part 1 (Section 1A.13) and not in other Parts • Approximately 85 new definitions have been added • Approximately 35 existing definitions have been revised

  5. Section 1A.13 – Meanings of text headings (Standard, Guidance, Option, Support) relocated and clarified • Relocated from Introduction to Section 1A.13 • Standard statements shall not be modified or compromised based on engineering judgment or engineering study has been deleted.

  6. Section 1A.09 – Engineering Study and Judgment clarified • New statements added to explain deviations from Standard

  7. The meanings of approximately 40 acronyms and abbreviations used in the MUTCD are now listed in a new Section 1A.14

  8. Section 1A.15 – Abbreviations on traffic control devices • Additions, deletions • Use on portable changeable message signs vs. use on fixed message signs and large permanent CMS • Punctuation or characters other than letters or numerals should not be used on any signs NO
