The Madrid Story • One seed can start a garden • December 2003: Jeff Wilcox discussed the possibility of a special fund with Reuben & Irene (Wilcox) Peterson • One candle can light a room • Reuben & Irene discussed the possibility with the Johnny Danos & Johni Hays of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation • February 3, 2004: A joint meeting was held with the Madrid Action Committee & Madrid Lions Club. Response was favorable.

One step can begin a journey • May 3, 2004: Madrid Community Endowment Fund was established as an affiliate subfund of the Greater Des Moines Community Foundation. • Board of Directors was selected • Purpose: “To enhance the quality of life in Madrid, and its rural community, by providing resources for a broad range of charitable causes.”

  5. One person can make a difference – you! • Following the February 3, 2004 joint meeting, it was decided to try to raise $25,000 in donations by April 30, 2004. • The goal of $25,000 was set since this was the maximum amount that could be matched by the Endow Iowa Fund. • A donor could become a charter member by donating $1,000. • Madrid Community Endowment Fund now has 31 individuals, families & businesses as Charter members that want to help building a foundation for Madrid’s future.

  6. Summary That one seed back in December 2003 has started a garden throughout Madrid, rural Madrid, Urbandale, Ankeny, Altoona, and Long Beach, California. We are in process of getting more information out and inviting people to become a member of MDEF. http://www.madridiowa.com/contact.html
